Hey all! There is a certain thing that I noticed a long time ago, but recently experienced again yesterday while playing wipeOut, a fast paced futuristic racing game.

I, as a lot of people, often struggle with letting go, or trusting myself to be well without actively taking control or solving things.

I have learned however, that to heal and grow as a person it is important to trust your instincts, your body and your inner processes and sometimes let things be and let go of control.

There is no more fitting exercise in this than growing in certain challenging games. I mostly experience this through wipeout or sometimes hard platformers, but I suspect that people who like soulslikes often feel the same sensation: you can grind a hard part as long as you like, but the moment you start letting go and trust the experience you have built throughout your attempts is when you suddenly start doing what you believed to be impossible.

And now it goes even further. I start a new time trial in wipeOut that is seemingly impossible to achieve. My first attempt is a whopping 10 seconds too slow. But instead of disappearing, I smile and look forward to the growing experience. Because I already know I can do this. I just need to let my body process this, experience all the hard corners and quick shifts. And while calmly doing so, often even listening to a podcast or some music on the side, it indeed does happen that way. And when you finally beat the time, you do it with 1 second to spare, and it didn't even feel that hard. Just a logical conclusion from a process of learning, growth and trust.

Of course this doesn't always work. I often get too focused on almost winning and become overly conscious and start making mistakes. And some challenges just are too hard / not made for you and it is OK to let go then. But even in that case, letting go after calmly growing to my limit feels satisfying, as I know I gave it a chance.

These experiences give me trust in other processes in my life: healing from fears, mental barriers, mourning, learning new skills. It's a great thing that I wanted to share.

A very different vibe, but

A Grand Don't Come For Free - The Streets

The songs on this album are all good, but as a whole, this is one of my favorite albums ever. I'm not even really into this genre (rap / hiphop...) but the story it tells and the way it delivers is so human and recognizable that it is ingrained in my soul forever.

Life, falling in and out of love, friends, doubts, it is all delivered in such a pure and honest way. The final song is just the cherry on top and has one of the biggest catharsis moments in any music.

Yeah that one really felt like a perfect match!

As you can see in the amount of games and genres I hovered up last year(s), I am interested in a lot of stuff.

Mostly interesting, meaningful games which are not too long and have a good narrative or emotional impact. I also love a good puzzle game, as there the emotional impact comes from solving the puzzle and appreciating the design. But also big blockbuster experiences if they are well designed and have a captivating narrative. My favorite games I played this year are:

  • The Last of Us Part I
  • Monument Valley
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • The Case of the Golden Idol (waiting for a price dip on the sequel)
  • Thank Goodness You're Here!
  • If Found...
  • Outlast
  • Platonic
  • Cocoon
  • The Walking Dead: The Final Season

How old is your daughter?

Hi all! It's been a while since I posted here. I have a bad habit of buying a lot of games in bundles on Humble and Fanatical, and have gathered quite a large amount of game keys that way.

More than I can reasonably play in my life. Especially since I am also still interested in new games coming out ;).

So I had the idea to give something back to this awesome community. A free steam key for everyone (*) who genuinely desires one. Just mention what types of games you like to play and I will try to find one that fits. These are all relatively cheap games, so don't expect any AAA blockbusters. Please don't just ask for a game to then resell it, I will not say what game it is so you will have to redeem it to know your gift ;).

(*) I will stop eventually, so we'll see how long this statement stands ;).

This is an ideal scenario for piracy I feel. I pirated it at first, unsure if it would be for me. Now I own it on both Switch and Steam :).

Most certainly! I've been playing this game for ages so I 'm unsure what advice is beginner friendly and what not, but let's see...

  1. Indeed, use any opportunity to throw away one of your starting Strikes (and to a lesser extent, the Defends). Strikes are by far the worst non-curse cards, dealing only 6 damage for 1 cost and taking up a slot in your five card draw each turn. You'll obtain way better cards and want to increase the chance of drawing those, which is why you really want to remove bad cards as frequently as possible. (At shops and events).
  2. Do not avoid elites! These are the special looking enemies on the map and they are the only fights who drop Relics. Having good Relics and building your deck around them is essential to winning this game!
  3. Don't pick a card at the end of every fight, only pick the cards that you really want. A small but predictable deck is way better than a massive deck full of OK cards. Seriously, this is one of the most important things I learned, the skip button is there to be used.
  4. Pick cards and relics that increase card draw. A big issue in Slay the Spire is drawing a bad hand and not having the necessary cards for that turn in hand. Lots of cards, relics and potions will allow you to draw extra cards during your turn, which can often make the difference between life and death in this game. Especially towards the end when you have more energy, it becomes extremely important to be able to spend it on good cards, and increasing the cards you draw per turn gives you more options to play good cards.
  5. Finally, keep trying. Different enemy types attack in their own pattern every time. Even when you lose, you start to learn their mechanics and how to best counteract those. There are three elite types per act, and three end boss types per act. For the end bosses, you can actually see on the map which one you will have at the end of the current act! So in total, there are "only" 9 different bosses* and 9 different elites. Once you get to know them, you'll realize their strengths and weaknesses!

There is a tenth secret boss at the true ending, but let's not dwell on that for now :). Suffice it to say that the pro players have win streaks of 20+ on the highest ascension difficulty (ascension 20) while always taking on this extra final boss. So this game is insanely tactical and almost any run can be salvaged to win even on the highest difficulty!

Enjoy your journey :). Oh, and start with Ironclad, he's the most straightforward character!

Did you ever give Slay the Spire a go? I was also quite sceptical about roguelikes, but now it is by far my most played game ever at a whopping 600 hours.

The beauty of it is that it is quite easy to understand, but with an incredible amount of depth to it. You'll start out having trouble winning your first ever run, but that's when the fun begins. There are 4 characters, each with their play style and cards, and there are 20 ascensions to unlock, each being a more difficult version of a standard run. In the end, you'll gain such a deep understanding of the balancing and tradeoffs at play that you can't not be amazed at this achievement in game design. Baalorlord is a great YouTuber and Twitch streamer who is also one of the best players in the world. He was able to do a consecutive winstreak of 20 wins on the highest ascension, showing that this game is RNG based but has a tremendous amount of skill involved too.

A nice article. I share the author's dislike of Antifa techniques and behavior and also see it as not constructive. Counterproductive, but in no way terrorist. However, this designating of Antifa as a terrorist organization allows them to take any form of dissent and claim it is Antifa, in effect turning any form of protest into a crime. Nasty stuff, literal forced radicalization so that any form of opposition can be characterized as crazy, violent and dangerous for the rest of the population, which is almost never actually the case.

Telltale was severely mismanaged. They expanded way too quickly and created incredible amounts of debt based on the idea that all their games would be as successful as The Walking Dead. I do believe that there is a place for episodic adventure games, just with a small enough scope and expectations.

You can read it if you add archive.ph/ in front of the link (replace the www with it). It really is a well written article. I also don't like paywalls, but I like good journalism and as they are still figuring out a way to earn money on the web I also understand their choice for these types of strategies.

There is a difference between telling and putting videos on the internet of you masturbating.

The server I mentioned in an earlier post seemed to be functioning well, so I added the info needed to show it in the games server list. This is the current description of the server:

An unofficial Mineclonia server for the Beehaw Community, set up as an experiment by a passionate user. This is not in any way sanctioned by or associated with the Beehaw site or administration, just a fun side project of a Beehaw contributor! The seed of the world is "beehaw". Enjoy and b(e)e nice!

To play, download the Luanti client for your desktop or mobile platform. The server should be visible in the server list under the name "Beehive". Just pick a name and password and start building fun stuff!

Hi all!

I have a linux VPS that I rent in Germany. I use it for random projects and stuff, and I thought about hosting a Minecraft clone on it specifically for beehaw!

The opensource framework I used is called Luanti. In that engine there are lots of implemented games to choose from, I choose Mineclonia as it seems very popular and well supported.

The server used "beehaw" as map seed, and is currently running at the following IP: 212.227.170.117, port number is the default 30000 for Luanti.

How do I join? Just download the Luanti client, go to "Join Game", fill in IP and port and register using your desired username and a safe new password.

I don't have a URL for it yet and it is also invisible in the server browser of luanti, but you should be able to register using the IP. Looking forward to seeing others appear. This is a first experiment, so don't be angry / sad if stuff breaks or gets lost. I just thought it would be fun to have a game to hang out in :). There is a maximum of 16 concurrent players at the moment. This is the default, I have no idea if the server can handle more or less! Also, please be kind in there. I am unable to moderate this place. If nasty stuff happens there, I might be able to block some people but I would probably just have to nuke the server!

Hi all! It's my birthday today, but I'm feeling a bit shitty as I haven't been in a good headspace lately. Got some messages from friends but not really in the mood to do something or see them today. But that's OK I guess, there always comes a time where I'm more in the mood to be social, just a strange situation to be in on your birthday.

I have been enjoying digging through Blue Prince though, so I guess I'll do that tonight with some pizza and maybe a chill podcast.

I've also been reading a bit more lately, currently going through Gate of Ivrel by C.J. Cherryh and A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. These were bought with my first wage (from a small part time job in a supermarket) in a long time. I'm trying to read more woman writers in science fiction, and I'm super impressed with both.

Enjoy your day and look at the small stuff that makes you happy!

I played around 10 hours of UFO 50 when I got it, and even though I liked a lot of the games it kind of slipped of my radar after this.

This week I've been giving it another go and I have some THOUGHTS to share:

  • Avianos is something I immediately closed down because it felt like a bit of a headache, but now that I've been playing it I am astounded by how well it is designed. An absolute masterpiece in strategy, playing it is immensely exciting. It has so many intricacies and interacting mechanics while still being rather simple and limited in scope. Phenomenal game.

  • Magic Garden I liked the first time around, but now that I'm going for high scores I realize just how meticulously designed it is. This feels like an all time classic arcade game from the likes of Pacman and Tetris. Perfectly crafted mechanics and gameplay loop, with interesting risk-reward mechanics and tough but fair difficulty.

  • I'm finally starting to click with how the Campanella controls (because of The Big Bell Race of all games), so those games are starting to open up their magic to me too.

  • Moon Cat is a beautiful example of learning to play a game from scratch to mastery. A lot of people absolutely hate the controls, but to me it felt amazing to go from complete incompetence to muscle memory of all the moves.

COOP corner:

  • Bushido Ball is extremely fun to play in coop with a friend. Just a great and fun grind, though slightly overshadowed by...
  • Hot Foot: this is one of the best sports gaming experiences I've ever had in my life. Funnily enough, I used to play dodge ball quite seriously a few years ago, and it's absurd how much of the real experience is captured in this arcade 2v2 version of it. My only criticism is that it NEEDS a real 4 player 2v2 mode. This would result in some of the best nights ever for my friends group!
  • Seaside Drive: this felt like AAA UFO 50, just an amazing run from start to finish with great asymmetrical coop.

About half of my games are still dusted, so I think I will be dipping into this collection for the rest of my life. What an incredible achievement!
