I just started yesterday in a VM. It's no stress and you can easily put your configuration on metal after. Pretty fun stuff.

I wouldn't recommend on steam deck. On a desktop/laptop yes.

I would set up a Kali VM and play on HTB or tryhack me. They will have windows machines already set up for you. HTB academy's "getting started" module would be a good place to start or TCM's practical ethical hacking course (there is a free version on YouTube).

I would say if your school uses handshake or something similar start there otherwise the usual jobs boards work.
