No, I don't think you're going to do anything either way. When there was only the Raytheon protest, I doubt you called your state representatives about Palestine. Now that they're also blocking traffic, I'm sure you'll continue to do nothing.

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 1 points 18 hours ago

I think the most effective protest would be one that directly acts against what they're protesting against, like putting traffic cones on self driving cars or the Tyre Extinguishers deflating tires.

But that kind of protest doesn't really apply to sending billions of dollars worth of weapons overseas unless you want to do something very illegal or violent. So whatever the people protesting think will help seems good enough to me.

Is getting a news story all that matters for an "effective" protest? If so, you must think blocking traffic is an incredibly effective protest strategy.

Protesters accuse Raytheon of abuses, block plant entrances

It's amazing how protesters already tried that and nothing happened.

18 people facing charges for allegedly defacing Raytheon sign during protest in Tewksbury

Somehow, the "effective" protests you recommend don't seem to be doing anything. Do you have any other bright ideas? Maybe something that the average person will actually learn about?

Claims

Claims held by raw food proponents include:

  • That heating food above 104–118 °F (40–48 °C) degrades enzymes in raw food that aid digestion, when in fact enzymes in food play no significant role in the digestive process, prior to being digested themselves.
  • That raw foods have higher nutrient values than foods that have been cooked,  when in fact cooking affects nutrient contents variably – depending on the plant food and cooking method – and may actually increase availability of fat-based nutrients, such as vitamin E and beta-carotene.
  • That foods cooked at high temperatures, especially meat, may contain harmful toxins, including trans fatty acids produced by heating oil, acrylamide produced by frying, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Not all cooked food contains harmful chemicals, and a diet containing a mix of cooked and raw food is normal. According to the American Cancer Society, it is not clear as of 2019 whether acrylamide consumption affects the risk of cancer. Public health authorities recommend reducing consumption of overly cooked starchy foods or meats.

Health effects

A raw food diet is likely to impair the development of children and infants. Care is required in planning a raw vegan diet, especially for children, as there may not be enough vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calories for a growing child on a totally raw vegan diet.

Food poisoning is a health risk for all people eating raw foods, and increased demand for raw foods is associated with greater incidence of foodborne illness, especially for raw meat, fish, and shellfish. Outbreaks of gastroenteritis among consumers of raw and undercooked animal products (including smoked, pickled or dried animal products) are well-documented, and include raw meat, raw organ meat, raw fish (whether ocean-going or freshwater), shellfish, raw milk and products made from raw milk, and raw eggs.

One review stated that "Many raw foods are toxic and only become safe after they have been cooked. Some raw foods contain substances that destroy vitamins, interfere with digestive enzymes or damage the walls of the intestine. Raw meat can be contaminated with bacteria which would be destroyed by cooking; raw fish can contain substances that interfere with vitamin B1 (anti-thiaminases)"

I don't speak for all of lemmy, but yeah I think I am going to hate on the raw food movement

Back up cameras are mandatory in the US, and apparently Automatic Emergency Braking will be mandatory starting in 2029, so you'll be stuck with some sensors whether you like it or not.

But otherwise I agree that buttons and dials are better for controlling AC and radio than a touchscreen ever will be.

The graph is showing who pays the least as a percentage of family income. I really don't think it's disingenuous to be talking about tax rates as percentages rather than the total amounts paid.

The % shown makes it look like they’re not paying as much taxes as the rest of us.

That's because proportionally, they are paying less. Millionaires and billionaires are paying taxes at a lower rate then everyone else, even though they have so much more disposable income.

I don't know what your ideal version of talking about this would be, but these three facts, that the top 1% pay the least proportionally, the top 5% pay the most in absolute terms, and the top 10% control two thirds of all the wealth, are all related in a pretty basic way.

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 34 points 4 months ago

And the top 10% owns 67% of all the wealth (I'm not seeing an option to show just the top 5%). Considering how many millions and billions of dollars they all own, it only makes sense that they're also paying the most. Especially since they can easily afford it without lowering their standard of living.

However, PS3 architecture was so elaborate and unique that it remains next to impossible to emulate to this day

I'm no expert on the subject, but I happen to know that RPCS3 exists, and they claim ~70% of titles are playable today.

Even the first season had Amon, the guy that wanted equality between benders and non-benders. At one point we're even shown that power was cut to a predominantly non-bender neighborhood, and when people went outside to protest to get their power turned back on, they were all rounded up and arrested. Afterwards, when Korra goes and tries to get the people that were arrested set free, she's told

All equalist suspects are being detained indefinitely. They'll be freed if and when the task force deems them no longer a threat.

Just in case it wasn't clear enough by that point that non-benders were treated as second class citizens.
