Another dead floppy drive has landed on my desk. I was told that "the motor isn't working". That can have different causes, but let's find out what the actual problem is. I never worked on one of these drives before, but they are related to the CBM 8050, a drive that I like very much.

Awesome list! Here's to another great fedi year!

Yeah forms and very basic HTML its good. Anything complex and you have to take over. Great at saving time, like an intern. But a bit worse in that the intern will typically get better and the ai hasn't really.

Yep interesting times!

It always makes me think of: https://collapseos.org/why.html

I dont personally think we are anywhere close to the collapse the author states, but its a step. If you cant get replacement parts (or they just get too expensive for the average joe) you have to make due with what you got.

  • shadow bans are some of the worst parts of reddit. You never know what kind of rules you may have stepped on acidentally. Coming from all -> subreddit, posting a comment like "lemmy is awesome" and not seeing the comment pop up is disheartening.

We should do the same....when we get big enough its an issue. At the moment, its just great people want to moderate at all.

Man RAM/DH is going through the roof. Going to be a fun time with all the tarrifs too in the US.

Lets see how far it goes if AI starts failing...or even if another company can produce faster than they can.

I'm imagining Debian as the super old penguin with a beard meditating on the mountain. Only comes down to update periodically, then back up it goes.

Local Linux meetup is going to be ordering a couple of things soon!

Does the url not resolve on certain browsers or something? I usually just copy/paste or use a firefox plugin to generate posts for lemmy/piefed/fediverse.

I personally love yacy.

As more people switch from fossil fuels to electric vehicles, governments are starting to worry about lost revenue from fuel taxes. The response? Laws that would tax EV owners based on the miles they drive.

On the surface, these taxes are framed as “fair”: EV owners should contribute to road maintenance and infrastructure. But are these charges really fair? Do they take into account the massive societal and environmental benefits of driving electric? And who truly benefits from these policies?

In this video, we break down the data, explore EV taxation programs from around the world, and take a deep dive into Oregon’s newly-signed EV tax, coming in 2027. We examine fairness, equity, and what these policies really mean for EV adoption — and for the future of cleaner transportation.
