Great and all, but this is a literal press release. It could be PR spruiking, it could be pump’n’dump play, it could be friggin genuinely great. No way to know from a press release.

This is one area where Apple has it pretty right. A Mac will do somethings when ‘asleep’ like download emails and texts. It also can broadcast its location if the ‘Find Me’ function is on. If it’s plugged into power then backups will also run, and background app updates will happen. It does this in a low power mode, so it won’t get hot enough to need fans. It’s worked flawlessly for 20 years. Meanwhile all our PCs are set to ‘never sleep’ and just get shutdown when not in use. I never trust a PC laptop to wake successfully from sleep just by closing the lid.

The whole premise of ads on Twitter is that they’re targeted.

IBM don’t sell consumer crap. They sell smoke and mirrors to major governments and industry. They’re chasing jobs worth millions per pop. They want ads to target the people making those decisions.

It’s not the onion, it’s The Chaser who are based in Australia. And I guarantee they don’t give a shit.

Weird take, what’s your beef? They most certainly do slap on huge fines, and are much more aggressive about enforcing privacy requirements than the US/etal.

This is kinda like cursing the worlds fastest sprinter for just not running fast enough.

This is kinda like comments from the alien site circa 2010 which have aged pretty badly.

“20% renewables is the absolute maximum that can be achieved, anything over that will result in Armageddon!!!”.

Well, they were significantly more secure by default than Windows due to various design measures including the separation of user land. And old OS9 was friggin brilliant for a web facing machine back in the day.

So, let's be honest here - producers artificially ramped up wholesale costs in the months before the new increases were handed down by the regulators (e.g. restrict supply through maintenance, and then unleash supply when the price is higher).

They can do this because the biggest ones are both on the retail and wholesale side. We're getting fucking fleeced.

It’s an extraordinary move, but I think they’re spot on. It’s a huge amount of money to spend on a sporting even for a few weeks when Victoria is in a real cost-of-living crisis. There are much more pressing priorities for regional Victoria than a legacy of some upgraded sports venues.

EA response: “Toughen the fuck up you whiny little pricks”.

There’s a few things at play with noise, and unfortunately there’s no easy answer to your issue.

Easiest and best bang-for-buck: seal your windows up tight. If there’s little gaps for vents, the window doesn’t close tight, or things like that, they will leak noise.

Most effective: replace windows with solid frames or insulation packed extrusions, double glazing using laminated glass, and make the inside pane a soundstop type of glass. Make sure any opening windows have seals.

The curtains probably help with some very high pitched sounds, and there may also be a placebo effect at play, but they’re going to do bugger all I’m afraid. Noise is just vibrating mass, and it’s harder to transmit vibrations through dense mass. So yes, a curtain is better than nothing, but relative to your glass and walls it’s closer to air.

If noise is an issue for sleeping, the very best thing to do before shelling out loads of money on snake oil curtains is to try a few different ear plugs.

That damn Melbourne community has posts with 400+ comments. Honestly, what is going on here?

It's the middle of winter, so I know we're all still surfing and drinking in the beer gardens while they have nothing to do but chatter while they freeze their nuts off, but still...put some damn effort in people.

Browsing through the federated list of communities, it's interesting to see the local Aussie Zone ones so active compared to most. I'm sure we're not seeing every thing, but I imagine that most of the more active communities will be federated here.

Big props to Lodion for getting things off the ground. What a legend! And good on everyone here for getting on board so quickly. You're all bloody legends too!

13 year club here too. It’s sure seems like a lot of us long timers have been the first to move. I guess there’s a certain sense of ‘I’ve seen where this goes’ from experience with other sites in the past.

I’ve been in Sydney for 12 years now and we’re up the Blue Mountains all the time. I’ve been putting off the Lockeys Pylon walk because there’s just so much else to see and do, but yesterday was the day.

And it was a beautiful perfect sunny winter day. So little haze that you could see the CBD towers. And I do love this side of the Grose Valley. Heaps of flowers out, with new wattle just coming in too.

The walk was great, but I think Dr Dark’s cave is my favourite spot in that area.

Where’s your pick in the Blueys?

What good are interest rate rises to fight inflation when these mugs slap 20% on to your home & small business power bill?

Sydney Community? (aussie.zone)

If we're going to have a Melbourne community, can we have a Sydney one too? It will be just like the Melbourne one only insufferably smug and better for it.
