It seems like you’re looking for a prescriptive definition of cult and culture that would cover every cult and every culture, and I don’t think you’re going to find one. Humans organize in complex ways that rarely align with strict definitions.

Cults tend to be defined by how they control their members. Cultures tend to form around similarities.

You need actual moderation to keep people safe.

I don't like the overuse and misuse of Material UI – the paper-looking thing with raised textures and shadows. It takes a bit of work to make it look good, and many sites just drop in a CSS file and call it a day.

Dude, have you worked in tech? At all? It’s already horrendously overrun with men who step outside their space and make everyone’s day worse. I don’t begrudge women for being frustrated that it’s happening at the Grace Hopper conference.

Hey folks. I've run a Plex instance on my home server for friends and family for a while now. I recently discovered how easy it was to use Stremio + Torrentio + Debrid, but all my users are already used to Plex, and I like to use the Plex app to download media to my phone before I fly somewhere on vacation. The plex_debrid project made me wonder how easy it could be to use Plex with Debrid.

Over the last few months I've been putting together Coaxist, a single Docker container with Plex, Overseerr, Rclone, and Debrid support. Features include:

  • Support for multiple Media Profiles: e.g. grab 4K DV copies for home viewing, and 1080p copies for maximum compatibility
  • It's just Plex: use the Plex apps, share with other users, download for offline viewing
  • Plex watchlist and Overseerr request integration, out of the box – no copying API keys around
  • "Instant" downloads with Debrid caching support
  • Automatically refresh your Debrid files before they expire

It's easy to get started: start the container, set your Debrid credentials and media profiles in the config, and sign into Plex and Overseerr. The Connector searches Torrentio for your requests and sends the files to Debrid, while Rclone mounts the media locally for Plex to serve. Check out the Quick Start guide.

This project is still in early stages – expect many breaking changes – but if you're brave, and have a Linux, Unraid, or NAS machine that can run Docker containers, I'd love for you to try this out and let me know what you think.

Scuba Hand Signals (greatdivers.com)

This article introduced me to a bunch of wildlife hand signals that I hadn't yet learned.

Hello, I'm Matt (lemmy.globe.pub)

Hi everyone! I'm Matt, the admin of this instance.

I put together Globe.pub after leaving Reddit and wishing that alternatives existed for the communities that I used to frequent there. I'm a software engineer in my work, so starting up a Lemmy server has been a good test of my skills.

Some places I've been:

  • France: I visited every few years when I was growing up. My parents wanted me to meet my mom's side of the family, who moved from Manila to a village east of Paris when my grandparents moved there in their old age. I'm still trying to keep my French fresh.
  • Japan: I visited for the first time this year and I'm absolutely enthralled. I can't get enough of the modern cities and the proximity to beautiful nature.
  • Ireland: I have family in Cork that I love to visit, and Dublin is full of the loveliest people. I had a trip planned to Galway in March 2020 😬 and I'd like to see more of the countryside too.
  • Philippines: I visited once in 2010 and finally got back to see the family this year.

These days I'm trying to travel internationally more – as much as my job allows – and I'm getting into scuba as an inexpensive adventure hobby. I'm looking forward to traveling to warm water locations to get those dives under my belt.

I'd love to hear about you too – please post your own intro here in Main!

Server maintenance today (lemmy.globe.pub)

Hello travelers!

I'm doing some brief server maintenance to update globe.pub to 0.18.4 and do some other networking housekeeping. Please expect some downtime over the next couple of hours.

I’m the owner and admin of the instance, and sometimes there are tidying/housekeeping tasks I need to do with user-created communities.

It’s probably the AudioData API.

[-] mplewis@lemmy.globe.pub 24 points 1 year ago

It absolutely matters. We need to consider that a right-wing actor is likely to exaggerate claims against an organization that is ostensibly socially-minded and represents anti-corporate interests, like Mozilla.

I do enough of this in the day job. I don’t have time to mess around with free hosting to save $20 a month.

Oracle is all fun and games until they lose your instance’s IP or data and don’t give it back because you’re a free tier freeloader.

Maybe you should take what she says seriously.
