Belfast was an awfully precarious location when this was taken in 1987.

To be fair, I don't think anyone had moved in there yet.

There is nothing new here. There has always been a vocal, violent, right leaning minority in Irish society. There have been two instances that have made headlines around the world in the past few weeks that may make it seem like Irish society in general is leaning further to the right. I hope this isn't true.

It didn't work 23 years ago in Tipperary, it won't work now. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/fire-at-hotel-for-asylum-seekers-1.264123

They'll claim the insurance, rebuild the hotel and refugees will move in anyway.

The idea of someone having a pet snake in 1982 would have been so bizarre that it would be deemed comical. That said snake is called "Ginger," a typical name for a harmless cat, not a 30-foot python reinforces that. This would probably have raised a sensable chuckle back in the day, but I don't think it really stands up to the test of time.

While not a renaissance fair exactly, there is a jousting tournament in Leeds Castle in Kent once or twice a year. It's a lot of fun with armour, swords, horses, the whole shebang.

No one likes taking orders. Requesting something in the form of a question makes it seem like they are helping you rather than obeying you. "Do you think it's a good idea to let the dogs tangle?" is better than "can you not let the dogs tangle" which is negative and could be taken as bossy. There are studies that support this.
