Be sure to checkout !chibike@midwest.social I have a decent list of resources in the side bar, including the offical bike maps and the popular Mellow Streets Map.

Happy riding!

Thanks! Good catch, I tried to do an image with a link but it looks like Lemmy didn't like that. I updated the post to use the link.

I'm starting to think this may be a weekly ride.

I mixed up the times last week and got there an hour early so I just went back home... I plan to actually get there at the correct time tomorrow to participate.

This wouldn’t be distracting at all 😻

[-] pbrisgreat@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Some of the folks on the ride(shout out to !chibike@midwest.social) I did last weekend mentioned it and said its gets pretty crowded/crazy. Seeing these pictures definitely confirms that!

May have to make it a point to check it out before the summer is over though.

Au Cheval is nice but damn do they make you wait! I'll be adding Rubi's and Monster to my list.

I finally tried Phodega on Ashland. I got the Beef Pho, my partner got the chicken Bahn Mi, and we shared an order of fried pork dumplings. To close out the meal we got some of their house-made Ube cookies and those were tasty and a lot of fun, ube seems to be having a moment.

Everything was pretty good but the dumplings stole the show, almost wish I had just gotten 2 orders of those. I got the beef Pho because it's their signature dish but I'm not sure id get it again, it was a little boring and flat and those meat balls were FIRM. It wasn't bad, just not exciting, there were definitely better things on the menu.

Next visit I'll be trying their chicken fried rice.

What a great way to spend a Saturday, I almost flaked and slept-in instead(social anxiety amiright)but I’m glad I got on the bike and made it out.

It was my first time trying all of the places we stopped at. The highlights for me were the iced latte from Sawada and the almond croissant from Bitter Sweet(pictured).

Special thanks to @chicago@midwest.social for putting this on, I can’t wait for the September 16th ride.

"...Where's the joke?"

Hope The Hard Times is a-okay here, I don't follow them as much anymore but I plan on changing that.

Favorite Jazz Station? (midwest.social)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by pbrisgreat@midwest.social to c/jazz@lemmy.world

Sometimes its nice to let someone else take the wheel and have a jazz station(with a real human) playing while I work.

I'm currently in Chicago so I have a slight bias towards our public jazz station WDCB. Special shoutout to my two favorite programs they host Notes From the Jazz Underground and Jammin' Jazz

What are some of your local (or not) favorites?

Izzy's Garden (midwest.social)

Here's Izzy enjoying her little deck garden a few days ago.

When the weathers nice she loves coming out on the porch, munching on some cat grass and cat nip (everyone should try growing both!), and then taking a nap on the love seat (note all the hair).

RSVP for all the details, but it looks like the group is meeting at 9am at Sawada Coffee.

This event is hosted by @Chicago@midwest.social

See you there! ☕🥐

“He said [it] tasted like that junk drawer that everybody has in their kitchen, and that just seemed so insane to me,” Mechling said. The idea that a drink could be so off-putting seemed improbable, but as soon as Mechling tasted it, he knew the description wasn’t an exaggeration.

I've known about the Bike Angel program for a little while now but never looked into it. In a nutshell you can get rewarded for helping redistribute the classic bikes across the city, they do a good job gamifying it too.

Last week curiosity got the best of me and I took a look at the program and its rewards. I saw you can extend the base ride from 45 to 60 minutes if you worked the program a little bit and hit the first "achievement". You can also cash out points to extend your subscription (if you worked the program enough you can extend it indefinitely) or for Lyft credit (car/scooter/ebike)

So on Friday I set out to hit 250 over 3 days with my partners subscription. She recently got one so we can ride together and she wouldn't have to deal with everything that comes with being a 3rd floor bike owner (mainly getting the bike up and down the stairs). Here are some take-aways:

  • Its more walking than riding, I walked between 5-6 miles each day. I had a much better time wearing walking shoes vs the shoes I wear riding.
  • I put in between 2-3 hours each day
  • Its all about maintaining the multiplier streak between days. 4 positive rides in a row resets the multiplier clock. Try to plan it so you only need one "positive" ride to restart the clock the next day.
  • Finding drop off/pick up loops with a short walk is the best way to get a lot of points quickly, I had a lot of luck in the West Loop.
  • I cashed out 150 points for $30 in lyft credit that she can use for ebikes when we want to haul ass.
  • Fun/different way to get some exercise and see the city
  • The newer classic bikes (they have the same style basket as the ebikes) are definitely a better ride than the older beat up ones with only 3 gears.
  • Cracking the top 20 leader board was a lot of fun
  • I'm probably done with it now that I unlocked the 60 minutes rides, the other perks don't really seem worth it to me, but we'll see.
  • They're gonna send me a dumb pin that I'm actually excited about

Happy to answer any questions!

Chicago style pizzas arent cut out for a to go slice. Im surprised someone is even doing a deep dish slice to go, sounds like a mess. And as a Jersey kid the crackery thin crust style they got out here just isnt worth the trouble, and they don’t reheat very well.

Im actually not surprised NY style slices dominate this list, they just do it better and are more forgiving to a reheat.

The last bike sox tailgate looked like a great time. I'd consider going to the next one and skipping the game!
