Why is this guy's tweet relevant to anything? He buddied up with Assad while Syria was killing the Kurds, and now he's wanting to buddy up with Putin while Russia is killing the Ukrainians. His opinion is garbage.

I saw my first anti-trans meme on lemmy.ml today. It was a screenshot from a Babylon Bee article.

On Reddit, I didn't like how much things would get downvoted if the sub didn't want to hear them. It really strengthened the hive mind. At the same time, it was an organic way of rejecting garbage like anti trans memes.

I feel mixed about whether or not they add to a community. I'm not worried about bullying, but I am worried about how they shut down ideas, and encourage everyone to think the same way.

The Co-op Wars (www.tpt.org)

Food Co-ops in the 70's were nuts. Some folks made this documentary about the co-op wars that happened in the Twin Cities, where folks were taking over co-ops by force. Just found out today that you can stream it for free through Twin Cities PBS. Worth a watch.

I saw Bonnie Prince Billy play a couple weeks ago and he mentioned in between songs that the Mekons were one of his favorite artists.

This surprised me. I like the Mekons, but have always considered them to be a band that was ok, but not great. Made some good punk songs, kept playing for decades even though it seemed like nobody was paying much attention. They started as a punk band in the late 70's in Leeds - same artsy social circle as Gang of Four and the Delta 5. Somewhere along the line they branched out and some of them moved to the US and started the Waco Brothers - a countryish band, and also a crapload of side projects of some blend of country/folk and punk rock. In general I've always thought the side projects were just fine. Like good background music but not something I'd seek out.

Then I found out that Horses from Bonnie Prince Billy's first band - Palace music was one of these side project songs. The original was put out by two of the long-time Mekons members. It's not a song that catches my ear, but Bonnie Prince Billy manages to turn it into something different.

Then there's Just to See You Smile. Bonnie Prince Billy put this out on an album of covers. It's a Tim Mcgraw song, and is IMO a bland country-pop song in it's original form.

In short, Bonnie Prince Billy has an amazing ability to find really good song-writing buried underneath bland execution, and reshape it into something pretty beautiful. Tons more examples, but these are the first two to jump out to me. Link related.

Personally, I like it here and will probably stick around. I hope the servers can scale, and that new communities grow.

I'll still wind up looking at Reddit for meme content until it turns up here. There's a lack of goofy pointless shit here currently.

If I understand right, you can respond to a post if you arrive at it through your instance that you're logged in to. If you find a post through Google or another link, you can't just click "reply" - you have to find your way back to the post through your server.

I'm sure the devs are working on cleaning up that experience. Sounds complicated.

Old man from Canada came up with this song 40 years into his career and holy shit.

We have a six-month old and decided that we don't want to go too deep into a 529. Neither of us went to college and we're successful, so we don't want to assume she'll want to.

We figure 10-20k is a reasonable amount for her to have in there. We assume she'll be able to use that much even without college. We're dropping a few thousand dollars in there now, and I'm going to add a little bit over time. We're doing a regular taxable account for her also that I'll be putting more money into.

Investors will give cash in exchange for equity in the company. The cash is used to fund whatever expenses aren't covered by revenue. Those investors are going to expect profitability to come eventually. Sometimes the business winds up doing some stuff that damages their product in order to achieve profitability.

A company that isn't profitable will still compensate their CEO, so spez is certainly taking gone a big paycheck. In addition, these net worth calculations also take into account stock. Spez most likely still owns a piece of Reddit, and that would be a factor.

You can still get very rich off of a company that isn't profitable.

Harsh truth, I don't think his new album is as good as his old ones. Still nice to have fresh material out though!

That's actually one of it's 25 jokes.

Thank you so much for your efforts in packaging it for Fedora, and for the clarity on the status! I deeply appreciate it.

I'm also new at this, and agree that it's confusing.

I also think that subreddits were ready confusing at first. When reddit was new, I had to explain to people that the front page was garbage and that they had to find the right communities.

As the Lemmy ecosystem grows, I picture communities on certain servers becoming the clear winners, and the equivalent communities on other servers withering.

For example, I'm following the Linux community on both Beehaw and Lemmy.ml. I think the Lemmy.ml one is gonna be a lot busier, and folks will naturally gravitate towards that one. On Reddit it took me a while to figure out that /r/meirl was so much better than /r/me_irl.

I feel mixed. The shift towards COSMIC DE got me off of POP_OS. I wanted the newer Gnome features, and that stopped being their focus. I don't wanna wait 2-3 years for a great DE when I already know I like Gnome. I switched to Fedora and use Pop Shell, and am really happy with my OS now. I also felt like the public shade between Gnome devs and S76 devs was tacky. With that said, I bet Cosmic is going to be great eventually. It'll be great to have DE in the ecosystem with a focus on performance, UI, customizability, and actually looking good. Even if I don't use it, I bet it'll push the other big DEs to get better. Friendly competition is good. Also, it's ridiculous that you have to go with a WM to get tiling, and that it's not easier to get in Gnome. Real glad Pop Shell is still available, but I don't think anyone's maintaining it so it can't last.

DJT is obviously guilty of a bunch of crimes.

Where in the US can you still find a jury without a single Trumpster on it though? It's sad that getting away with everything he has is possible, but I don't see him ever facing consequences.
