In what context are you asking about the definition of a "member"? SDF has lots of different memberships. Lemmy, shell accounts, Mastodon, etc.
For general questions about lemmy, you might have lots of luck over in https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy
But discord supports sending messages to people who are offline. It kind of breaks the paradigm if certain features require full synchronous communication. Maybe supporting p2p transfers during a video / voice chat would work though.
They are separate applications with separate logins. Go ahead and sign up for a new account on mastodon.sdf.org.

There are some collaborative wiki-like features in stackoverflow and maybe some of the voting features that may not be supported in the fediverse. We could capture the spirit over here though!
Most normal users won't care about any of this because it'll shake itself out quickly as has happened with Mastodon. But if you do care, join up with a smaller server that plays nice with everybody and enjoy the whole fediverse.
Just need a "mark read in scroll" for those of us who like fresh content and doomscroll often.
Wow this is such a cool watch. I think this is the sinn I'd get.
Meh.... The fact that I can log on after a while and read all of messages sent before I left makes some of the async-supporting chat applications more appealing to me.
