I just got a new laptop for my work (which I also use for personal stuff, it’s a family business).

It came with Windows 11 but I’d got a bigger SSD which I’d installed before I’d even turned it on so Windows never even got a chance to boot.

I installed one of the Fedora atomic distros and it seems to be pretty good, though I’m trying to figure out how to tune battery life. I’ve setup TLP but haven’t noticed any improvement, though, it’s still much better than when I first tried Linux on a laptop.

I’d never used Fedora before, but the first distro I ever used was Ubuntu Dapper Drake and I’ve dipped my toes occasionally since then, but never fully committed until now

With RAM prices going up, and probably other key components too? I doubt there will be an improvement.

I haven’t been able to afford new hardware for a few years, even secondhand has gone up in price. There was a brief blip where recent PCs that couldn’t support Win11 dropped in price (on the second hand market), but it seems like those have gone up too as sellers realised people don’t want to use Win 11, or don’t care about it.

Aren’t a lot of migraines stress induced, or otherwise affected by environment?

I’m just an idiot on the internet but this feels very much like “well, doing what would actually help isn’t viable, but we can gaslight your body into thinking it’s not a problem?”

I’ve been putting off switching because of everything I have setup for work, but next week I have a new laptop arriving and I’ll be wiping the pre-installed  windows and chucking probably fedora on it.

Once I have that first one done, I’ll be able to start moving all my others. I have a bunch of Hyper-V VMs that I need to migrate which has been the main cause of my hesitation.

I got my copy in a Kelloggs cereal box. Those were simpler times

I’m gonna download this to my iPhone, just in case.

Try and stop me, Tim Apple!

I’m in NZ, we are 2 working adults with 2 kids in daycare, living in a tiny 2 bedroom place. We cook everything from scratch, rice/beans/lentils/potatoes/etc. We scrape by, but we’re one accident away from destitute. We can’t downsize any more, it’s a lot harder out there for some than many realise

I don’t know much, but the govt could encourage R&D through grants particularly for new players. I know of a few people who did research for masters/PHDs that ended up going to Aus to carry cos there was no money to fund them continuing locally

I do think New Zealand’s emphasis on primary industries is shortsighted, but it seems it’s always been that way. Any business in other sectors that gets big enough ends up moving headquarters overseas. And I think NZ is losing ground as certain markets move towards fewer Ag focused food products like meat alternatives. NZ has a lot of expertise in the food technology but it gets lost overseas because opportunities for bleeding edge food science are basically non existent in NZ unless you want to go into the Agricultural sector

I’m not sure if they all do, but some models also support a daughter board for additional IO. Often it’s DisplayPort but I’ve seen ones with Ethernet and DB9/RS232 on AliExpress/ebay
