I think the stress and uncertainty of the last few years has left us with no real optimism. There's usually a lot more talk of New Year New Start and resolutions about getting your life generally better but now it feels like it's just dragging yourself past a check-in point on a fairly mundane racetrack.

This year I'm definitely going to try and focus on good things in my journal to see if I can improve my outlook.

Photo Friday didn't last long (although I may have warned you that I'm terrible at sticking with things) but it's a new month and a new weekend so let's try a weekend challenge instead.

Snapshot Saturday is more about taking candid shots of everyday things, rather than hunting out the perfect shot for a particular prompt. So feel free to share a photo of something from your weekend - before and after shots of gardening progress, the shiny finish on your freshly cleaned vehicle (haha) or a good sunset.

Rules: No NSFW, no shots you didn't take yourself.

So.... mission accomplished? It doesn't matter which bird won (so long as it wasn't a bloody bat!), John Oliver did the organisation and the birds a massive favour.

It's Friday! There was no prompt last week because I sort of went into lurk mode - it's a bad habit that I need to work on.

This week's prompt is black and white.

Whether it's a two-tone cat or something quite mundane made dramatic with filters, I want to see how the lack of colour can be a focus of your shot.

Usual rules apply: No NSFW and no shots you didn't take yourself.

Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Man, this week seriously got away on me. The only photos I managed to take this week were either work related, or photos of things I needed to remember Hopefully this weekend will be a bit calmer.

This week I already have an idea of what I want to shoot and it's going to require me to get out of the house, which is kind of the whole point, at least for me.

This week, the prompt is: something that looks like a face, but isn't

The same rules apply, namely, it has to be your own photo and it can't be NSFW but otherwise, go nuts 😁

Glad to hear you've maybe turned a corner. There's something particularly unfair about being at your worst over a weekend.

General pessimism this morning. Would anyone be interested in a couple of weekly threads showcasing non-misery-inducing things? I'm thinking maybe a thread to show off things we've made ourselves (building projects, cakes etc) or maybe a photo challenge?

I've never done cover pages before, my entries have always just run on one from the next, but I fell into the habit of doing a doodle calendar, then it expanded to two pages, then I needed to fill a blank page so the calendar would be on a single spread...

You know, the usual evolution of journaling, haha.

I really wish I knew more about this stuff, but every time I switch from Local to Subscribed Malwarebytes gives me a popup warning me that lemmy.world is compromised and blocked (even though I'm still seeing posts from communities there) but that's all it's telling me. Should I be avoiding that instance?

When I remember I add bits and pieces to my journal (I go through stages and then forget to collect stuff). I mostly use double-sided tape from the paint department at my local hardware store but I have a bottle of clear Elmers glue too, since I've seen that recommended quite a bit.

I used the glue to add some business cards from a local restaurant, only they were gloss cards and the glue gave out completely within a week, leaving a nice glossy expanse of nothing.

What do you use to add things to your journal? Any brand you swear by, or would avoid like the plague?

I love that random bypassers were supporting him, especially the road crew donating gloves.

I think it was only the second time I've sat down to stitch this year so have a bit of catching up to do! Pattern is A Crazy Wonderful Owl Family by HAED.

That is a really unfortunate url 🤔

This link popped up in my RSS feed today and it looks really promising - the writer is looking more at the how-to side of journaling than sharing pretty pictures.

Groceries this morning. I was bored and ran the entire shopping list through the Grocer app, since we have to drive past two other supermarkets to get to our one of choice. By stopping at each one and grabbing the specials we saved nearly $30 so the doubtful SO has decided that doing a grocery check before leaving the house is my new Sunday morning chore.

In related news, I am turning into my mother.

I would prefer not to federate with them. Their track record is abysmal and the privacy invasion is horrendous. One of the people over on Mastodon recorded more than 200 queries from the app within an hour of installing it - they are determined to scrape every last detail of your life into their advertising database and, well, fuck that.

Mastodon.nz announced a week or so back that they have no intention of federating with them and I found that to be reassuring: we're all here because we specifically Do Not Want a corporate body throwing adverts and algorithms at us.

It wouldn't surprise me if blasting the fediverse with millions of users is specifically designed to weaken smaller instances, just to oh-so-graciously offer their users and 'safer, more stable' place to set up.

Morena. Heat pump is going and I'm on my second coffee. Hope everyone is keeping warm this morning, I don't think we quite had a frost but that was probably to do with the wind than anything else.

I love the lady on one news being completely disbelieving. I guess she doesn't like the idea of partaking of something with such a social stigma.

I have a Kobo Libra 2 and I think the only extra features are that it's waterproof and you can do audiobooks on it via Bluetooth (you might be able to do that on Kindle too, I'm not sure).

I went with Kobo because I'm not a fan of Amazon and because I wanted to access a subscription service through it. With the optional sleep cover I never turn it off so it's always ready to go.
