I have a naïve question. Isn't this illegal in the first place as per the Health Act? How was it even under consideration and why wasn't this immediately shutdown?

So far all the coverage I've seen for similar cases is along the lines that "some clinics have been charging patients for preferential access to healthcare because of staff shortage" or something like that. The general vibe I've been getting is "Oh, hope they don't do this, it isn't right" instead of "They CAN'T do this".

If this is indeed illegal, why hasn't there been any aggressive takedowns as it would have been done for other crimes?

Same here, and I agree with you. I think this whole reddit fiasco will cause enough migration to sustain Lemmy and lead to organic growth over time. And I think this is best for Lemmy in the long term.

It's a shitty situation all around. If BoC doesn't do this, inflation runs high and that will ruin affordability even more. If they continue increasing, that again ruins affordability by increasing mortgage costs, which is the biggest expense for majority of people.

In my naïve opinion, we probably need to slow down immigration, which will cool down housing and probably better long term. But then again, that will cause shortage of labor and output. That in turn is probably going to lead to higher prices again (I could be wayyyy wrong though)

I'm no expert, but this is my view on the whole situation. Would like someone with more knowledge to provide their insight.

Yeah, sarcasm doesn't translate well in text. At times, it's easy to identify a sarcastic comment, and sometimes it's not clear. I have myself interpreted comments on differently before seeing the /s at the end. Changes the entire perspectives sometimes.

Remember Streetlamp LeMoose? There haven't been any such memorable events on reddit in recent years. What about the ol' switcheroo? You don't see that anymore.

They are indeed as you said, forgotten history to modern redditors. Back in the day, it was a closer community, and these events were discussed for days and referenced for months if not years.

Like you said, reddit has been consistently losing it's community aspect. I'm glad to have experienced it, but I think it's time to move on.

Very well thought out post and I agree with everything you've said. I still remember the outrage with Whatsapp and how everyone was moving to Signal. Once everything died down, people went back to their old habits and what was familiar to them.

I think we do have a sufficient number of users now to keep going irrespective of how reddit fares. Communities are beginning to form and even if there is no futher mass exodus from reddit, I think Lemmy will be fine and will see organic growth over time.

I've already noticed I'm spending more time of Lemmy than reddit since the past few days.

Really great article. I've been hearing about it for a while, but finally managed to read through it fully. Very well thought out and a brilliant write-up IMO.

Great analogy. Same with r/RingsOfPower and r/LOTR_on_Prime. One community doesn't like the show and the other one does. You join whichever most aligns with your preference.
