Why do you sleep in front of your house?

A combination of not having the courage to vandalize a place that would make more sense but where you may encounter resistance, combined with a joy of punching down on people/institutions I guess?

I'm quite optimistic about a usable Linux phone in the near future, maybe 5 years from now or so. When smartphones were a new thing, it was really hard for open source projects without a major company backing them to keep up with all the new developments. Hence all the projects that died out. But innovation on smartphones has basically come to a halt these days. Sure, your phone can get a little bit faster and have round displays now, but nobody cares anymore. Nothing of all that is essential. So, give it some time, we'll get there.

That's a good theory sir/lady, and actually was the case until around 10 years ago.

Then Snowden happened, and we found out that the nsa is sucking all unencrypted traffic out of the net and into their databases.

Then letsencrypt happened and now you can get your certificates for free. Don't pay 1000$. Letsencrypt is free and you can automatically update certificates. If your hoster doesn't offer https for free, choose a different hoster.

To be fair though, most engineers I know overestimate their intelligence and just ignore entire fields of knowledge. And are even weirdly proud of that. Cringe

With jobs, there is no trade off between pay and atmosphere/nice environment. Bad employers pay bad and treat you badly. Good employers give you decent wage and also treat you well

The problem with most rss readers IMHO is that they lack a decent filter function. ttrss had great filters, but I stopped using it when they switched their dev process (I think to docker at the time, which I couldn't use with my hoster). Now using rss guard, not too happy but surviving.

RSS is great, but often contains a lot of noise. If you can filter only what you care about, great. Otherwise it's just information overload.

None of these engineers built a dam, ship, or plane. They did some math and drew some lines, and some other people built the stuff.

Would be a cool game mechanic to play with. Typical RPGs just assume you can go to bed, instantly fall asleep and get up at the correct time. What if your character had insomnia due to stress/trauma/...? Any game that does this?

I was thinking about going for the trail or at least a part of it by bike at some point, but I wondered if anyone here has done something similar before? I'm not religious and would rather do it for the experience and to get to know Shikoku better. I'm not sure whether this would be considered offensive to practicing buddhists in any way and I don't want to disturb people in their religious activities. But it seems like some people have done this by bike before, so maybe it's ok (looking at the paywall of a Japan Times article)?

I'm a moderately fit cyclist, I've done multi-day tours before years ago but not in Japan. So I'm also a bit unsure about steepness and weather conditions. Roads are probably in a decent condition (?) My options are an urban foldable bike (I kind of like that idea) or renting a decent one (probably better in reality).

Before coming to Japan I heard from other foreigners that it's best to choose one spelling for your name in Katakana and stick to it. I made sure to follow this advice.

But I just noticed that my name is spelled differently in an official document (年金手帳). I guess someone in some public office just had to come up with their own spelling. It also looks like a reasonable transcription, but it's different.

Do you think this causes problems down the road? If so, how could I change this? Any experiences also with other official documents welcome.
