What do you do (either in your country/culture or as a tradition with your family/friends) to celebrate or mark this time of year?

Anyone recommend any good discord servers for chat/gaming?

Looking for something relatively active and not too toxic, figured Beehaw is a good place to ask

I don't understand a lot about this conflict but surely there can be no justification for this. Those poor people

Are there any decent open source alternatives or should I be looking to go down the building route?

I am a coding newbie so would be a bit daunting!

Keeping the weekly post warm until @alyaza comes back ๐Ÿ™‚

What's everyone been up to? Any plans for the weekend?

It's summer holiday time in the northern hemisphere which made me think of this.

What kind of holiday/vacation do you like going on? What do you like doing? Beach, adventure, city break, etc.?

What's the last holiday you went on that you really enjoyed?

Thanks for posting, it's really interesting to see what goes into running something like this.

Chucked a bit into the pot. It's not a lot but I want to contribute where I can.

We have the phrase 'every Tom, Dick and Harry' which is like that (UK)

If we're talking about a generic person it's usually Mr/s Smith or Mr/s Jones (near Wales)

Not marking this as NSFW because it's about health, but mods please let me know if you think it should be and I will change it.

Health screenings are so important so I don't want to put anyone off them, but has anyone else found them more difficult as you've gotten older?

Just had my cervical screening and it hurt like hell this time. Last couple of times have been fine. Not sure if it was the nurse or if I'm just more sensitive today or if it's a normal thing to find it more painful. I figure if it is the latter then it's good to be aware.

This will have an impact on journalists who use Twitter to get tips for reporting. Seen some who were concerned this would happen

It's unlikely she would have given consent for this photo to be online

Great news, this is exactly what Oxford Street needs if it wants to keep it a decent shopping destination. Last time I went I saw way too many closed shops and dodgy American sweetshops

Not on your instance but it's so good to see unequivocal inclusion and support for the trans community. There should be no room for bigotry of any kind.

What books/podcasts/videos do you recommend on philosophy?

Can be of any style (introductory or more comprehensive), just would be good to build up a repository on here and see who else is interested in philosophy more generally.

I find The Prince by Machiavelli fascinating, can definitely see how some leaders take his ideas to heart.

Skincare is one of those things I always feel like I should be better at (and that I'm failing as a girl because of it somehow). I'm lucky as my skin is fine really (I drink a lot of water) so I've never really done anything. Selfcare is something I struggle with generally so never found it worth the effort.

I'm thinking as I enter my thirties though I should. Just had a sheetmask and enjoyed it but I have no idea where to start generally in terms of it.

What's your skincare routine? Is it worth the effort/cost?

What do you read when you're struggling to read what you usually read?

Or to put it another way, what's your junk food/comfort read?

Thanks for the transparency. I personally think this is the right move. Meta shouldn't be trusted, based on their previous performance. If they do something to change that then we'll see, but I'm not expecting them to change their stripes.

Been catching up on all the NDA drama on Mastodon, it's really caused a rift between some users and instance admins. Felt a bit like an 'aww it's all grown up' moment to see Mastodon having a scandal.

The EU has been good at holding phone manufacturers to account on this kind of thing, glad it's gone through. I've had at least two phones die on me through the battery breaking, it shouldn't be cheaper to just buy a new phone than get the battery replaced. So much waste.

Hoping us UK folk will see the benefit of this as I imagine it's less effort to just bring the change about across the board than to be specific about geography.

Where does the best cocktails in your opinion?

One of the great things about this instance is that I don't think I've seen anyone complain about the setup in a way that reflects on you guys. There's a lot of understanding that it's early days and it's grown exponentially in the last few weeks. I think the mentality of this instance is what keeps and will keep people here. It's a nice space to be in.

So don't worry, you guys are doing a great job!

Not if Meta is managing it. I don't particularly trust them with my data so I'm not going out of my way to give it to them
