The "youth camp" back in the period these were drawn likely refers to a youth labor camp (rather than a recreation camp) These were a common thing during socialism - basically high school and college students were "volunteered" to help with seasonal labor (often crop harvesting) when school was out, and sometimes with large construction projects, irrigation/drainage, etc. It was generally unpaid and more or less mandatory work, but also an opportunity to live in a camp with other young people for the summer and socialize, so most people remember them quite fondly.

Lost of photos here from that period, as an example

It says in the manual that it'll only connect to 2.4GHz networks, but I have both frequencies active on my router, and no dice.

Are they using the same name (SSID) ? Some 2.4 only devices won't connect to a network with the same SSID on different bands. I have a separate IoT SSID available on 2.4 only for such devices (it's also on its own VLAN)

Crazy thing is this was built in like the 1880s - my apartment building in Chicago is older than this castle. And the structure of the new castle was built out of brick, with stone cladding on the outside to give it the castle look.

They even dynamited actual medieval twin castle ruins that were on this site to make room for the new castle.

USSR was not Axis ffs... Axis was Germany, Italy and Japan and their allies during WW2 - the enemies of USSR, which was allied with the US in that war.

2nd world refers to the Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War, including USSR and its sphere of influence, as well as China

The last Bolt model year was 2023 - you can't really find new ones at dealer lots anymore. There is supposed to be a new version coming at some point, but no official details or timeframe yet.

Plenty of countries have national parks btw. Many of them had them before America.

Well not really though ? Yellowstone established in 1872 is generally considered the first national park, in the modern sense of the term*, and inspired others to follow in the next couple of decades in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It wasn't until the 1900s that the first national park was established in Europe.

* there are a couple of other places that also claim this distinction, depending on how exactly you define what a national park is, but not many

Calling national parks "America's best idea" is a quote from historian and environmentalist Wallace Stegner - I think the point of it is not to toot some US exceptionalism horn - in context it's more of an acknowledgment that America deserves a lot of criticism - saying that national parks are America's best idea is actually putting a bit of shade on other American exceptionalism claims, especially during the Reagan "shining city upon a hill" era.
