More pay phones? (lemmy.world)

Came across this phone and thought I’d share with people who would appreciate it.

Any others?

This could be the hack that ends all hacks--if it actually happened. Does anyone know more?

Not sure if this is the place to ask, I recently moved to OKC for an internship and was looking into the local 2600 meetings, since I finally live in a city that has them. I found where they meet in the latest issue, but that's about all I know. I don't know any times or days or anything. I've tried looking around on the web, but also haven't found much. Does anyone know how I could go about finding any of that info out?

Take a look and go to your local meeting! If you're looking for something to talk about, think about going to the HOPE conference.

Recommending to all #hackers and #curious a fairly new #zine reminds me to #phrack I need to poke more @arcane just shared with me but looks like finally some good information without having to fall for some capitalist site full of bloatware and adds. Their mastodon address: @tmpout and the site: https://tmpout.sh/ will be nice if they add it to #gemini and #gopher #HackingCulture #Hackers #Hacking @2600

The World of Hackers - https://vid.puffyan.us/watch?v=9DgMPFkZmPY #Telecomix #HackerCulture #hackers #hacking @2600 #2usenet ntroduces us to the world of hacker culture. Emerging from the 70’s counterculture around conceptions of personal freedom, decentralisation of power and sharing, hacking really came to prominence with the emergence of the Internet as a ubiquitous public forum from the late 90’s onwards.

This legendary reference has been around since 1975. The Jargon File contains a lot of hacker jargon ('programmer slang'?) and just as much hacker humor. Added to by hundreds over the decades, it got fairly huge.

In the 90s it was edited and updated by the legendary ESR (Eric S Raymond), author of famed 1999 book 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar.'

The web version linked above groups the jargon by category, If you'd prefer the text version 4.4.7 of the Jargon File, it's here: ( https://jargon-file.org/archive/jargon-4.4.7.dos.txt ) Older versions can also be found online.

I figured some teleco geniuses out here, so I figured I might give it a shot.

The house I grew up in is looking to get rid of it's landline, and thus it's phone number. This phone number is one of the small number I actually have memorized-making it super useful, because I am unlikely to memorize any additional numbers in my lifetime, and certainly no numbers will ever have the same nostalgic ring to them.

They're a different phone carrier, and a different state. The current owner would be happy to hand the number over. Is this type of transfer in the realm of possibility?

Kevin Mitnick was a name that I heard many times before, but I was never really familiar with the person. I just knew about the "getting in trouble for computer stuff" and of course the "Free Kevin" movement.

The 90s were a time of discovery for me and computers. It was also a time of me almost constantly getting in trouble for what I was able to do with computers (and networks). It took a threat of being reported to the FBI for me to finally take a break from screwing around so much.

My friends and I use to buy 2600 magazines and go to the local meetups. There was even a time after one of the meetups when a bunch of us rented a U-Haul truck to use to actually go trashing at some local businesses. (Also, I was so excited when some of my work eventually made it into an issue of 2600. I wish I still knew some of the people I use to hang out, because I would definitely brag about it to them.)

And of course, my friends an I got a huge kick out of the Hackers movie when it came out. It may have been insanely silly, but it also made the nerdy stuff seem shiny and attractive.

Basically, the "hacker culture" was part of my adolescence and helped shape who I am, and a lot of that was influenced by people like Kevin Mitnick and the kind of stuff he did.

RIP Kevin.
