Can't play in 4k (lemmy.world)
submitted 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) by bizzle@lemmy.world to c/linux_gaming@lemmy.world

I've got my gaming PC plugged into the TV. Here are the specs.

6700 XT

R5 1600AF

32 giggle-bits of RAM

Plasma 6 Wayland

Arch Linux

My desktop is in 4k, but my steam games only go to 1080. I'm pretty sure my drivers are up to date. Any guidance is appreciated 🙏🙏

I've been a Windows user all my life and had dabbled in the Apple ecosystem for a bit. With the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in Oct 2025, I figured I'd put myself through a huge challenge of cutting over completely to LInux without a secondary backup drive with Win 10 on it. If I could survive the struggles for a few months, I'd be golden, and if I couldn't, then I could switch to Windows 10 LTSC and be good until 2029. The intention was to completely force myself in without a backup plan - the only way out would be to install a new Windows OS. I chose Linux Mint after careful consideration, especially considering that there's tons of resources and help with this distro, and it's a great onboarding ramp for Windows users. I need the familiarity since I'm in tech full time and just don't have the energy to hassle with my PC after a long stressful day at work.

I also used this as a good excuse to upgrade my PC a bit, too. 😀

After switching in mid December, I'm happy to report that I'm still alive after 30 days. My computer hasn't killed me. And I've been able to do work and game on my PC without too many hiccups. Marvel Rivals still crashes ever since the Season 1 update. Overwatch works perfect. My other games, on both Steam and GOG, work perfectly fine. But I haven't been able to test every game out there, but I know I can use Proton DB if needed.

I even edited this screenshot in GIMP after being forged in the fires of Macromedia Fireworks and Photoshop all my life! I even stripped exif data using command line tools! I even installed this cool neofetch thing that I always saw in people screenshots of their PC or whatever, every time I saw someone's Linux build with their thigh high socks and neofetch on the terminal!

But so far, switching to Linux Mint has been great! I'm excited to deep dive more!

Note:

  • I backed up all my data from Windows into a USB drive. I'm slowly bringing all that stuff over to my Linux Mint computer and rebuilding my music, video, photos, etc. Lot of work, but it's so cool feeling so liberated!
  • I may also want help from you Linux nerds from time to time. I'll make posts/memes begging for help when I get desperate. But so far, almost every issue I've had has been resolved via an internet search!
  • I pray that I won't come crawling back to Windows. I don't expect that to happen with how great my experience has been thus far.

Specs:

  • Linux Mint 22
  • Ryzen 7 9800x3d
  • Thermalright Phantom Spirit
  • MSI X670e Carbon WiFi
  • Sapphire Nitro+ RX7900 XTX
  • Corsair Vegeance 64 GB DDR5-7200
  • Gen 5 Crucial T700 (?) M.2 x 2
  • Corsair 5000d
  • Noctua case fans (Lian Li too problematic on Linux based on all the research I did in advance)
  • Seasonic Focus Gold 1000W

Old Specs Everything the same as above apart from:

  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Intel i7-12700k
  • Noctua NH-U12A
  • MSI Pro Z690-A
  • MSI RTX 3080 Gaming Z Trio
  • Samsung Gen 3/4 M.2
  • Corsair Vengeance Pro 32 GB DDR4-3600
  • Lian Li AL120 case fans

Playing modded Witcher 3 through proton. After dying and loading the last save (and perodically while playing) gpu clocks drop such that the framerate is barely above 60 (and very stuttery). Tried enabling framegen, same thing but it drops to 70 ish. It sometimes goes back to normal if I alt tab out and back, but that gets annoying when playing with a controller (especially if it happens in the middle of combat).

I can see the gpu clock dropping and going back up in system monitor. This doesn't happen with any other game. Any advice?

I've made the jump to Mint for my gaming PC. I work primarily on Ubuntu systems (cli, no gui) so it was a pretty simple choice. I installed GE proton, which fixed the lobby audio bug in phasmophobia, is there any reason I shouldn't just use that version of proton for all steam games?

One other question, evolution looks pretty solid for mail, any reason I should look elsewhere?

Hey,

I recently made the jump to linux. I wanted to sart PC gaming and figured I would start as I mean to go on.

I am having an issue with getting my ps5 controller connected. Steam recognises it, everything mapped fine. I open pcsx2 and it thinks its a dualshock 2. I cannot get it to work in game. I have remapped and everything but when I get to a menu, the D pad will work but selecting an option won't.

Any advice appreciated.

I think I have found a workaround: Set the Wine prefix's Windows version to Windows 11.

Details:

  • This can be done on the winecfg Applications tab, or by running winetricks win11. Note that it requires a fairly recent version of Wine (and winetricks if using that method) so it might require temporarily upgrading Wine/Proton in order to choose that option. Battle.net might lose your saved password if you do this, in which case you would have to log in again.
  • Once the games are updated, returning to the previous Wine version should be safe, at least until a better solution is found.
  • ~~This seemed to be what solved it for me, but it's possible that a side effect of my experimenting was the actual fix.~~ I have reproduced this workaround since my original post, so I am now more confident that it works.
  • Side note: I used GE-Proton9-22 in order to temporarily make the Windows 11 option available, despite the fact that Proton builds are not meant for use outside of a Steam-like environment. I'll try a non-Proton build next time.

Alternative approach:

Mert Eren on the Codeweavers forum relayed another workaround. Summary: The problem apparently lies in the latest version of the Battle.net "Agent" program. If your installation is old enough to still have the previous Agent version installed, it is possible to remove the new one and block it from being reinstalled, relying instead on the old version to update your games and make them playable.

CodeWeavers are investigating for the sake of their customers, but have not yet announced a fix.

Soliciting Recommendations for a Linux Friendly Wired Gaming Mouse.

Ideally:

  • No RGB (or at least has linux software compatibility to turn off the RGB craziness ~~without terminal commands~~)
  • Wired (USB-A or USB-C)
  • Scroll Wheel that has left and right movement for scrolling left and right on wide pages when browsing interwebs)
  • Two programmable buttons by the thumb (I use it for forward/back for internet browsing, and for hotkeys for gaming)
  • DPI increase/decrease buttons
  • Asymmetrical Ergonomic shape for a large hand

I have a couple of Corsair Sabre RGB Pro, Wired and Wireless but the RBG is too crazy on the new wired version and I don't have access to a MAC or Windows PC to install the Corsair Software to program the mouse to be less Epileptic Seizure Techno Rave Dance Party RGB I'M NOW LEGALLY BLIND Insanity. I wasn't able to get any linux hacks/terminal commands to work to edit or turn off the RGB.

(Edit: CorsairRGB Sabre Pro Championship Series isn’t supported in ckb-next or in Open RGB)

I also had a couple Razer DeathAdder V3 Pro wired, that had scroll wheel issues that made the scroll wheel unusable, so I am hesitant to buy any Razer mice due to their reliability issues with the scroll wheel.

(Edit: unless these are all bots, Razer has some serious issues with their scroll wheels recently for so many people to have the same problem)

I had some Razer mice from 2007 that fit my criteria but they have all broken and I can't find a decent replacement.

PLS I just want a wired linux gaming mouse without RGB and with all the buttons. Thanks!

Edit: Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Current Short List:

  • Logitech G502 HERO Gaming Mouse Wired
  • Logicool M500s Wired Mouse

Either should work with Piper and are on the list of supported devices.

For reference, there's also these tools for some Razer, Corsair and other gaming mice if anyone is trying to edit the RGB settings in Linux:

Fast paced retro FPS with double jumping and wall running. Side project by the creators of the commercial game Sprawl which has an overall rating of "Very Positive" on Steam. Made in the Quake 1 engine. All game game logic is FOSS under GPLv2, its original assets are free for non-commercial use (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) but it also bundles LibreQuake (MIT) for some stuff.
