They're the Warframe instance and I want to talk about Warframe with them

In an effort to get Federation working better and get better performance out of our Fly containers, I upgraded lib.lgbt to 0.19.0-rc.3. Apologies for the unannounced downtime.

So far it does seem to be running better... I am sometimes getting connection errors when I refresh though, will keep an eye on those.

Its been banned on blahaj.zone, startrek.website, and hexbear.

On hexbear, was banned for transphobia and racism, as well as the original account being banned for a chaser username.

On blahaj, was banned for harassment, personal attacks, and ableism.

On startrek.website, was banned for being a transphobic troll.

Beyond all of that, the username is obviously a chaser username and is transphobia itself.

Not saying what you should think, but you should draw your own conclusions rather than be manipulated by snippets of out of context screenshots.

I just lurk all the LGBT places, not really tied to any one spot. Hope they can all stop being so fractured one day and will express actual queer unity like irl spaces.

Why are hexbear.net and lemmygrad.ml blocked here?

Hexbear even is ahead of us and have a field for pronouns.

Without meaning to get offensive (because we still have Dolly Parton, and God bless her soul)... is Shania Twain our equivalent country queen?

I say this as someone who listened to Up! (both versions) throughout my formative years and honestly every single one of those songs was important to me at some point - from c'est la vie, which is fairly upbeat, to It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing, which is still my go-to sad song for when my depression catches up to me.

Just wanted to cast the feelers out; are we in the same boat? If not, why not? I want to contribute more but I want to know more about everyone here first 😅

Similarly to lemmy.ca and lemmy.world, we are also unfederated from hexbear.

It's been almost exactly two months since I started lib.lgbt so I thought it would be a good time to assess how people are liking the instance and Lemmy in general.

So... How are people liking Lemmy so far? Any comments/concerns about lib.lgbt itself?

Earlier I defederated us from sh.itjust.works. They seem like they haven't done anything problematic or concerning for a few months now though, and they have a tech community I wouldn't mind reading. Would people be interested in refederation?

The UI still shows being on 0.18.3 though I upgraded that as well, not sure why.

As other instances have done, we also are defederating from what appears to be a server taken over by alt-right and neo-Nazi content. Or an exploding-heads proxy. Or both.

This site has become overrun by bigots and nazis from exploding-heads looking to spread their hatred via this instance due to its lax or rather non existent moderation. The admin has not responded to calls for help he doesn't seem to be available.

If you don't believe me check the site, there are transphobic and climate denial posts on the front page here.

The current frontend lib.lgbt used is lemmy-ui. However, there’s no particular reason we should stay on that one other than that it’s the official frontend.

I saw a cool list with screenies of other frontend possibilities and was wondering if we should switch to one. Does anyone have any preferences?

Is there something about this instance (or about other instances) that I'm missing? The downvote button for me just completely doesn't exist. Applies both to !chat and to linux@lemmy.ml where I've been looking. No post appears to have any downvotes either, when I hover over the count it'll say "XX upvotes, 0 downvotes, ..."

I'm not someone who likes to downvote a lot, but especially on linux@lemmy.ml when I see misinformation/bad suggestions ("ChatGPT is better than a real person..." type things) I'd like to be able to actually downvote it.

This instance does not have custom emoji enabled, so lib.lgbt was not compromised by the hack that compromised lemmy.world and blahaj.zone.

Nevertheless I updated us to 0.18.2-rc1 which has a patch for the vulnerability in question, just in case.

Hi, I'm a vlemmy refugee and came here to find a new home. The only problem is I can't upload an avatar to my profile. All I get is "SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data"

Any ideas?

Downvotes? (lib.lgbt)
submitted 1 year ago by Veraticus@lib.lgbt to c/chat@lib.lgbt

Currently downvotes are disabled here because I’m a big softie. But I have found myself missing them every now and again…

Should we enable downvotes on this instance? Why or why not?

I upgraded the instance to Lemmy 0.18.1, turned on Captcha registration, and then turned on open registration. I'm also requiring verified emails, so hopefully we don't attract a lot of spammers... but I'm excited to see where the community goes from here.

Beijing LGBT Center became the latest group to stop operations "due to forces beyond our control".

"Organisers have been detained, and their friends and family members have been questioned by the police. This results in a lot of mental health pressure," said the activist, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Before the pandemic, the environment for LGBT groups was great. We could speak out loud and we won some legal cases," the activist added.

"I think we were too loud."

A number of users have made their way here from other instances; we welcome everyone, and I thought I would take the time to offer a clear vision as to what lib.lgbt is, why I created it, and what you can expect from participating in this community.

What is lib dot lgbt about?

We are primarily and firstly a space for queer people (and queer-adjacent people, including family and allies of all stripes). This means we are also inherently "political" in the sense that the existence of queer people is intrinsically political these days. While this reality kind of sucks, I didn't make the world this way; all we can do is live in it as best we can.

To me, all political considerations other than queerness are secondary. As long as your political philosophy aligns with queer liberation, you are welcome here.

The core tenet of all our users should be "everyone should be included and in every way possible." Let's take a practical example: the common troll debate topic of the inclusion of trans people in sports. Well, here, there's no debate. Everyone should be included in every way possible. Including trans people in a sporting league is, to us, as uncontroversial and proper as including Black people or Jewish people.

Failure to adhere to this assumption, or questioning the legitimacy or stability of queer identities, or "just asking questions," or wanting to debate queer people in the free marketplace of ideas, or whining about how the existence of this instance (or its moderation) is curtailing your freedom of speech, will result in scorn, opprobrium, and banning -- not necessarily in that order.

Why lib dot lgbt?

I created this instance as I fled from reddit. I love supporting queer people and debating politics, and was hoping to replace that in my life.

I initially applied to Beehaw and have nothing but love and respect for Beehaw and its mission. I wanted a space whose reason for existence was to serve and connect queer people of all flavors. Beehaw is not (and should not be) that.

This place is that.

Where is lib dot lgbt hosted?

From a purely utilitarian standpoint, this instance is on a pretty solid hosting provider (fly.io) and I expect very little downtime. While this is obviously just a passion project for me, lib.lgbt is not hosted in my living room but in a highly available cloud datacenter; the costs for this number of users are very low and I am happy to foot them.

You may depend on the reliability and stability of this instance and this community.

Who do we federate with?

We're not interested in federating with instances that allow debate on the question of queer identities. Thus, instances that willingly host content like The_Donald, anything TERF-related, and "free speech" bastions are prime candidates for disfederation.

In the end, though, I'd love to hear from you all! What kind of community should this be? What communities should we make here? I hope you all feel welcome, and if there are any questions about any of the above, please don't hesitate to let me know.
