Miller: I was told Batman could never fire a gun. I was told by the editor with absolute conviction. So, I came up with an excuse for him to fire a rifle, even though it was just a grappling hook into the side of a building, but it was just to get that picture of him holding it. I don't like these absolute dicta.

Snyder:Well, it's cool because if you can create a scenario where Batman has to shoot a gun and someone says, "Well, Batman can't shoot a gun." And you're like, "Well, what should he do in this scenario then?" And then if someone says, "Well, don't put him in that scenario." I'm like, "Well, that's a weak character." You can't have a character where we're modifying this scenario because he can't exist in it. That's not realistic. Now we're just creating scenarios that his morality can work inside of, rather than the other way around.

Miller: Absolutely right, Zack. That's not creative.

The Joker and Darkseid Campaign For Donald Trump in Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child from DC Comics

Today sees the publication of the much anticipated Batman: Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child from Frank Miller and Rafael Grampa. We pointed out yesterday that there was a certain amount of Trump re-election campaigning going on, and a riot taking place as a result. But that's just a tiny amount compared to the full comic book, published today. Here's a smattering.

Now, Trump is never referred to Trump and, indeed, he is not a Presidential candidate, here but a Governor seeking re-electing. Given Miller's happiness to put sitting Presidents into previous Dark Knight instalments, this suggests that a change may have come down from on high to amend President to Governor. That bloody Batman Damned, still affecting other comics.

With Batwoman in the middle of protestors, anti-Trump Batmen-masked protestors being set upon by Joker-themed thugs. But I'm sure there are good people on both sides. Carrie Kelley, previously Batman and now the new Batwoman, can only see the negative side. But she has to pick one..,

  • US Court cancels Marvel and DC's joint "Super Hero" trademark after legal challenge.
  • This opens the term "Super Hero" for public use, benefiting small creators like Superbabies Ltd.
  • The case argued that "Super Hero" is a generic term, not deserving of trademark protection.
  • History of Marvel and DC's previous successes defending the "Super Hero" trademark outlines their tight control.

The law firm of Reichman Jorgensen Lehman & Feldberg (RJLF) has announced a landmark victory in its trademark case against comics publishers Marvel and DC Comics. They have obtained an order from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office cancelling Marvel and DC Comics' joint trademark for the word "Super Hero" and thus allowing their clients, S.J. Richold and Superbabies Limited, to freely use the term. Bleeding Cool previously covered the legal situation here.

This trademark cancellation was granted after Marvel and DC failed to respond to court requests.
