Happy 2nd birthday! o(≧∇≦o)

It's June 21 which means Ani.Social turns another year older! Thanks to everyone who has stuck around and to all the newcomers this month! Unfortunately, I never really tracked our stats but the last birthday post mentioned that we were just a bit under 1000 users and now we're at 1600 with 180+ active users per month! But this is a federated platform, so we have users from all over the Fediverse participating in our communities!

I partially started Ani.Social as a kind of personal research project. Learning about the Fediverse as a practical approach toward a democratic social media is really interesting. For the past four years of my life, I have also been generally obsessed with thinking about and consuming Japanese media more analytically and theoretically. So combining that and the Fediverse, Ani.Social was born!

It's been really interesting to learn about how different people consume this so-called "Japanese media" and what kinds of discourse are produced, especially from people who willingly spend time on alternative spaces like the Fediverse.

With that said...

PieFed announcement!

For the past month, I have been testing PieFed, another Reddit-like Fediverse platform. I think it has a lot of potential and its been receiving a lot of development efforts from the Lemmy community lately. Compared to Lemmy, it's both ahead and behind depending on which areas you look. What I particularly like about PieFed is how experimental it is, and that's sort of what I need to further my research.

Right now, PieFed has flairs, spoilers, polls, topics, feeds (like multireddits), better mod and reporting tools.

You can test the future Piefed instance at https://pt.nyaa.social/. The tentative instance domain is Nyaa.Social and will likely share themes with Ani.Social but hopefully it'll be broader than just "anime and its related industries".

I would like to know what other people think, and what kind of ideas we can explore in Nyaa.Social. I don't think it should simply be "an alternative to Lemmy" or "an alternative to Ani.Social." It's a great opportunity to do things differently, and see what works and what doesn't.

There's no official launch date for the new PieFed instance but the earliest you can expect it is July 7. In the meantime, I would like to gather as much feedback on what kind of platform this new instance could be.

Here are a few screenshots of what the place looks like at the moment:

I should mention that Ani.Social is not going anywhere! It will continue to run and it will still be my top priority to make it a stable and easy experience for everybody even after the PieFed instance launches.

Thanks again mods, posters, commenters, donors, lurkers, and everyone else! If you have questions, feel free to ask! Enjoy the summer season! (^o^)/

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'll be updating the TOU in the coming weeks to include suggestions from the comments.

Policy Updates

I made changes to the policies found in https://ani.social/legal in response to users creating communities that might not be fit for ani.social. The new policy is titled "Community Creation Policy" which aims to limit the scope of communities created in ani.social. Below is a breakdown of the entire policy:

  1. The community should be related to anime, manga, or other related otaku and moe culture.

This should be obvious but "anime" is very broad. Especially the term "otaku culture" which could mean things not completely related to anime and manga (like trains or military) so I would like to limit those. Though in the globalized context, otaku is associated with anime, so I'm thinking of calling it "globalized otaku" or "otaku" (with scare quotes) as suggested by Patrick Galbraith.

  1. The community should have a clearly defined purpose or intent available in the community sidebar before any post, icon, or banner is submitted or uploaded.

This is very specific but I'd like to avoid communities created without any real purpose. This is mostly to avoid spam.

  1. The community should have rules available in the community sidebar. Likewise, the community must not deviate from the AniSocial TOU.

This is self-explanatory. All communities should have rules, otherwise it can't fulfill Rule 2 of this policy. Also, no community can be "above" ani.social's policies.

  1. The community should not feature content displaying genitalia, scat, extreme gore, snuff, or beastiality.

This is to limit "hentai" communities from being created here. I think it's best that hentai communities are created in other servers that can better support pornography. But I'd like to revise this so that discourse on hentai is allowed.

  1. The community’s purpose or intent should not exclusively focus on any of the following topics or niches:

Artificial Intelligence or AI-generated works; Cults or religion; Piracy, leaked media content, or violations of copyright laws; Political ideologies; Sexual intercourse or masturbation

This is to limit niches that might be better suited in other servers or to avoid controversy. It doesn't necessarily mean these topics are completely banned from the server. It just means the purpose of a community cannot be specific to these.

AI, piracy, political ideologies, and sexual intercourse already have their own Lemmy servers. I also banned cults and religion to avoid offending people.

Feedback

I'm looking for feedback specifically for the new Community Creation Policy. I'd like to make changes based on what the community thinks so if there's any changes you'd like, you can post it as a comment here so others can also talk about it. It can be for the other policies too.

I'll just note that policy changes are never really "final" as they change and evolve over time to address new issues and changes in the social atmosphere.

As for now, I'm considering adding these to the current Community Creation Policy to further avoid possible unwanted scenarios:

  • Limitation on number of communities created
  • Age of account or karma required to create communities
  • Limits on commercial activities

As much as possible, I'd like to very specific with the policies to avoid being overbroad. I would also like to avoid a "admin's descretion" clause to avoid abuse.

(a few other things)

I'm slowly adding more tasks to @Gaen@ani.social. Recently I added keyword filters to remove certain spam that might come up in the local feed. If Gaen mistakenly removes your post, you can send me a message.

The instance now requires registration applications. This was something I was completely against but we were removed from join-lemmy.org again because of open registrations. As compromise, new sign ups only have to type "I agree" in the text box as part of agreeing to the TOU which will be auto-approved (thank you Lemmy.World for the idea). Also, Gaen denies disposable emails and will send a welcome message to new users. Overall, I think this will turn out to be a good change.

There will probably be more posts like this in the future. Other than policy changes, I'll make a post on updating the site logo in the coming months.

I have been jamming to a djent musician for the past couple of months, and they have gone from about 10k subs to 40k on YouTube.

I think it would be nice to have content creators posting here, but I'm concerned about people complaining about YouTube and other platforms. Also, after the way Alex from Technology Connections was treated, I'd hate to see us get shitty reputation.

So, again, I ask before inviting them. What do you feel about inviting content creators? Is is invading your space? Do you welcome people just trying to make it? Would you rather keep them separate?

Not sure if anyone else faces the same issue.

No problem on the base ani.social or Voyager app btw.

Lemmy.ml content doesn't federate here, i.e. cross posting doesn't work from lemmy.ml, so I thought I'd manually cross post this request from @nutomic@lemmy.ml , the other Lemmy developer

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/29579005

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. To avoid this outcome and keep Lemmy growing, I ask you to please make a recurring donation:

Liberapay | Ko-fi | Patreon | OpenCollective | Crypto

If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Please use the link below to see current donation stats and make your contribution! We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

In the All Posts view, I'm seeing a ton of posts from a bot account in !Parentalité@jlai.lu

https://ani.social/u/ParentBot2@jlai.lu

Posts like https://ani.social/post/12398880

The bot was added as a moderator "2 months ago" according to the modlog, but seems to be going nuts.

It started and stopped "couple of hours" ago.

Hello everyone!

Recently, we had hours of downtime yesterday (March 16) and today (March 17) and some slowdowns last week. Basically, the server was suffering from storage performance issues. I talked to the hosting provider about it and we got it fixed. Hopefully we don't run into issues like that again (or soon at least).

We also had downtime around 1 month ago which was caused by really aggressive web scrapers which should be fixed by now. I blocked their ASN and I started blocking AI bots too. Other Lemmy instances have been affected by the same scrapers too.

There might be a bit more downtime during the next few days as I make a few changes to the way I do backups. It should only be a few minutes though.

Lastly, I'd like to introduce @Gaen@ani.social - a kind of AutoMod that should take care of spam. If you've been on Lemmy for a long time already, Gaen shouldn't remove your posts/comments or ban you. If you think Gaen made a mistake, you can send me an email: help@ani.social.

Occasionally it might send you messages if you've forgotten to mark a post as NSFW, but I'm still testing this. I'm also looking into a way to remove the "Nicole spam" with her.

Gaen is named after Gaen Izuko from the Monogatari Series because she claims to "know everything".

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :D

I wanted to suggest adding ani.social to lemmy-federate.com. This would make it easier for other instances to discover and federate with communities on the instance.

14

It's been a while since I've made these type of posts but there'll be a server maintenance that will (hopefully) address the recent Lemmy-UI problems.

edit: I'm going to cancel this because the problem has been solved by blocking excessive crawling/scraping bots. No more crashing and zombie processes.

It's been going on for maybe few days for me, could be on my side, but I tried VPN servers from different countries and it didn't seem to change anything, other Lemmy instances and sites work as usual. Here, opening a thread sometimes takes minutes. Sometimes it just hangs and ends up rendering empty page and you have to refresh in a few minutes to get there. Those issues aren't permanent, they come and go, it may be laggy for 10 minutes and then totally fine for other 10 minutes. It's laggy very often though. Anyone had similar issues?

Hi, I noticed that !honkaistarrail@lemmy.ml is missing posts from the last 2 months. Posts that do exist also have slightly lower vote count than in reality.

I compare by those 3 instances:

https://ani.social/c/honkaistarrail@lemmy.ml

https://lemmy.world/c/honkaistarrail@lemmy.ml

The past few days I've been noticing 5xx errors from Cloudflare while using the site.

Is everything working ok?

Is https://status.ani.social/ configured to check the loop through Cloudflare or directly?

For some reason this particular community doesn't have any posts on this instance other than my own recent one. But when you browse it from other instances, it has a lot, for example look here:

Is this a bug?

20

Proposal: Switch to Alexandrite or provide a toggle between interfaces.

Rational: Alexandrite passed all the markdown tests featured in this post. Unlike lemmy-UI and Photon. Fewer than 15% of Lemmy Apps display posts accurately

Additionally, it is pretty. :D

I think it's a great time to switch things over.

All major browsers and web engines support it and anything that doesn't anymore is painfully outdated. This would offer you improved quality to storage ratios. Additionally, it would support 10bit colour which can be important with anime art.

Ani.Social's 1st Birthday! 🥳

Today Ani.Social is officially 1 year old! It's kind of crazy that it's been a year already. I still remember the days when it was just me posting illustrations of Kurumi. Now there's nearly 1,000 of us and over 50 communities! We've been through a lot this year (defederations, federation issues, migrations, etc) but I'm happy there's a lot of support from the community and even other admins from different instances! I want to say thank you to everyone who has contributed through posts, comments, community tools, reports, funding, and more!

Ani.Social was kind of an experiment to see if hosting a public instance is something sustainable and fulfilling. After a year I can say that it is both! :D Here's to another year!

(Fun fact: We share the same birthday as Gawr Gura from Hololive EN.)

(Fun fact 2: Ani.Social was supposed to be a KBin instance. But because there was not docker container, I settled with Lemmy instead.)

Upgrade to Lemmy ~~v0.19.4~~ v0.19.5

We upgraded to ~~v0.19.4~~ v0.19.5 which brings some new features like the ability to remove stuff you uploaded through your profile page. A full list of changes may be found here. I also want to note that because sometimes upgrading Lemmy doesn't take very long, I might not make an announcement in advance anymore.

Accidental image removal

A few weeks ago, there were some images that were deleted because of a bug from a tool I used to remove old images cached from other instances. I have a long explanation here. This shouldn't happen again (hopefully!).

Verification mails did not send

For about a week in May, email was not working so some people who signed up did not receive an email. I was informed by a user who sent an email at help@ani.social. This has been resolved and anyone who did not receive a verification email can email me to have your account verified.

Random downtimes

You might notice that there are some downtime here and there. Part of this is because of small changes I make to the server (like enabling or disabling certain settings). These usually don't take long (a minute or two of downtime).

Sometimes you might see the instance gone for as long as an hour or two. This is usually caused by our hosting provider. This type of downtime is not really within my control so please bare with it. If the instance is down/inaccessible you can visit https://status.ani.social/ where I post updates.

Automatic moderation tools

In the near future, I plan to add automatic moderation tools (automod) such as LemmyAutomod and Fedi-safety. Both tools are likely experimental and may remove posts or images wrongly. I'll keep a close eye on them when I deploy them.

Closing thoughts -- one year in the Fediverse

A few days ago I was reading this article called "Seven Theses on the Fediverse and the Becoming of FLOSS" which made a lot of interesting points on the Fediverse (duh). Theses 3, 5, and 6 are the most relevant ones in my opinion.

Thesis 3 is relevant for a lot of the political discussions and issues on defederation you see around in the Fediverse. Thesis 5 is relevant for developers, admins, and moderators as it deals with labor. Thesis 6 extends this to users.

Transitioning from corporate social media extends far past from simply "install this app and treat it like Reddit/Twitter/Instagram". It's not just a technical change for most users, it's a new social experience. The social world of the Fediverse is different from corporate social media because of how it operates differently (in policy, labor, etc). More importantly though, a lot of our practices and principles are still experimental so it's interesting to see how these are changing and developing over time (and as mentioned in the article, how these will generate new "userships").

Anyway, I suddenly feel a wave of laziness so maybe I won't write anything more than that. Feel free to read the article because there's a lot to think about.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know! Thanks for reading all the way through!

Some recent posts that are supposed to have thumbnails have broken image icons for both thumbnail and "auto expand" image.

Some posts, thumbnails appear, but then the "auto expand" image is corrupt.

Sometimes, vice versa

e.g.

https://ani.social/post/4142945

https://ani.social/post/4102788

https://ani.social/post/4099651

https://ani.social/post/4077407

https://ani.social/post/4064665

https://ani.social/post/4063550

...and others...

When viewed from the web interface, with auto expand turned on, obviously.

I know some of these used to look okay before something happened.

Is this related to disabling iframes? https://ani.social/post/2612139?scrollToComments=true

Hello everyone!

I was looking for a Dragon Ball community, but couldn't find any active (https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=dragon+ball), so I was wondering if you would like to host this community on your instance?

I always prefer to ask people before creating a community on a theme-based instance :)
