Western society has become a hollowed-out shell of communal life, where AI chatbots act as digital opioids providing addictive facsimiles of human relationships. These are symptoms of societal collapse, where atomization drives the masses to seek solace in algorithms.

The following lecture was delivered by Christoph Vandreier, the national secretary of the Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei (Germany), at the SEP (US) International Summer School, held between August 2-9, 2025. It is the first part of a two-part lecture on the Origins of Trotskyism.

On Sunday, July 27, approximately 100 workers and youth attended the first public hearing held by the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC) as part of its investigation into the death of autoworker Ronald Adams Sr. The 63-year-old skilled trades veteran was killed on April 7 at the Stellantis Dundee Engine Complex when an overhead gantry crane suddenly activated and crushed him.

The meeting was held at the Marygrove Campus in the Bagley neighborhood of Detroit, where Ronald Adams grew up and where his family still lives. Among the attendees were Adams’ widow, Shamenia Stewart-Adams, other family members, and workers from the Dundee plant who braved the threat of retaliation to attend. They were joined by autoworkers from other area plants, as well as postal workers, teachers, students, and neighborhood residents.

The hearing was a powerful response by rank-and-file workers to the months-long silence from Stellantis, the United Auto Workers (UAW) and state safety officials. It concluded with the unanimous adoption of a resolution to continue and expand the investigation, support other victims of workplace hazards, and build rank-and-file committees to enforce safe working conditions as part of an international campaign to end the sacrifice of workers’ lives for profit.

In the course of this rank-and-file investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of this senior US autoworker, the WSWS has also exposed the treacherous working conditions that pervade the industrial slaughterhouses of capitalism that claim the lives of over 140,000 workers per year who die from occupational illnesses and injuries. Workers lives are wantonly sacrificed for the profits of capital. Workers must organize independently of the pro-capitalist union bureaucracy to defend their lives and safety!

They will make rabid claims of the "social credit score" supposedly imposed in China but then turn around and create an app called "Gage". Not that they had to, considering credit card scores are effectively what they accuse China of and have provably real-life consequences on the working class.

Dear friends and compassionate souls,

I write to you with a heart filled with an indescribable sorrow and pain that no words can fully express. My name is Ahmed Osama, and I am from Gaza, Palestine.

On the night of October 22, 2023, my life was shattered in a single moment. I was staying at my uncle’s house when a deafening explosion tore through our neighborhood. I tried to call my wife immediately, but there was no answer. I waited through the long, agonizing night until morning, when I ran to the hospital, praying for a miracle.

But there, the unimaginable awaited me. I found my three beloved children, my seven-year-old twins, Malik and Miral, and our five-year-old daughter, Nisma, lying lifeless on the cold hospital floor. They had been killed in the bombing that destroyed our home.

My wife, Areej, was critically injured and fought for her life in the ICU for two days before she passed away. My youngest son, Muhammad, was pulled from the rubble with severe injuries, including broken bones and deep wounds. He has since undergone four surgeries and spent two weeks in Al-Aqsa Hospital. Though he is now in a more stable condition, the emotional and physical scars he carries, like mine, are deep and lasting.

Before the war, I worked as an English translator. Our home was filled with love, laughter, and hope. That life is now gone. Our house in northern Gaza was destroyed, and I have lost my job. We have no source of income.

Today, I live with my elderly parents, both of whom suffer from chronic illnesses, along with my two sisters, my brother, and my son Muhammad. I am now the sole provider for my entire family, and the burden has become overwhelming.

The situation in Gaza is catastrophic. Bombings continue daily, the borders are closed, and humanitarian aid is nearly nonexistent. We are facing severe shortages of essentials, there is no electricity, no gas, no clean drinking water, and the cost of basic goods is beyond reach. Each day brings more hardship.

Famine has now reached its peak. People are collapsing in the streets from extreme hunger. We cannot access what is called “humanitarian aid” because those who try to reach it are injured or killed. You are our only hope for surviving this famine and this war.

In this moment of unimaginable suffering, I turn to you with a humble plea. Any support you can offer, no matter how small, could help us survive these dark times and give Muhammad the future every child deserves.
