As someone who was born in South America, it still kind of bothers me when people calls the US America, as if it was the only country in the whole continent :/
In this case I also thought he meant South America at first, but it's pretty obvious that he means the US
I'm from Europe and I also thought he meant South America, before I finished reading the context.
I know, it's more a subconscious thing for me. Also the fact that for whatever reason in many countries of south america we consider north and south america a single continent, so the word "America" would generally refer to the whole continent.

That when refering to the whole continent, english speaking people use "the Americas", and "America" always refers to the US (in english)
yeah i get it, i also am not from the us. but i think in this case context was obvious
