i cannot believe how many decades a single word has had a chokehold on this country with zero sense of political nuance
Yup. Decades of Cold War propaganda, an incompetent news media, and a binary, two-party duopoly that positions itself as "the right" versus "the left" have all worked together on this one.

And I still continually find people on the internet calling Russia communist. It's enough to make a communist scream.
Nah, it never ended. It just became multipolar and (usually) less obvious.
Ok, sure. But the whole red scare was specifically about the bipolar part with focus on the Soviet Union
Nuance doesn’t even enter the conversation when it comes to communism. Republicans tell lies based on their voters inability to understand the basic definition of communism.
