I've always heard he was a real doctor, but had to give up his license in order to do the show.
Yeah, he stopped renewing his license in 2006. He could’ve probably kept it. I know some non practicing doctors that still keep their license renewed.

Most of the retired folks I know with their licenses just want to write scripts without having to go through someone else. 😆
Not sure that's what "doctor heal thyself" is supposed to mean.
It’s mostly for family. If someone in the house gets sick, you can provide them direct care.
