I don't think Trump realises that we buy more cars and parts from the US than vice versa. I imagine if US manufacturers do leave, Canada will just pivot to EU and Asian brands. I'd love to see Renault, Citreon, and BYD here.
So we lose 30,000 or so jobs up here, while Ford, GM et al, who are already in a precarious position, need to be bailed out again. The capital costs of this kind of restructuring will be eye watering. This could be a spectacular own goal. Ford and GM are already in debt up to their eyeballs. And the future might not be so rosy for Tesla.
Also, if he's serious about relocating Aluminium production back to the US, he is really going to need those Canadian energy imports.
I'd offer him an egg in this trying time, but...
Yes, I never understood why the French brands aren't present in Quebec. They make more reasonably sized cars anyway.
The americans asked us to keep their competitors out, probably. Although I believe CETA eliminated those tarrifs so you might start seeing them around. I always loved that shitty little Citreon C3.
I would love to buy an EV, but our only options in Canada are US brands. The Chinese EVs are more efficient, longer range, and cheaper (if it didn't have 100% tariff on it). The only reason the tariffs are on those cars is to help protect the US auto markets.
I think it's safe to say the USA is no longer our friend and we owe them jack shit at this point. Remove the Chinese EV tariffs, bring in these cheap EVs, and we can move away from oil sooner.
Kia and Hyundai are both Korean and sell EVs in Canada.
I guess China's somewhat different approach to establishing a leader personality cult, intimidating its neighbours and suppressing women & minorities is... paying off?
Well, it's certainly a shitty choice to be forced to make, that's for sure.
Honestly? Regardless of BYD running an out of country sweatshop (which quite a few American companies have been caught doing), if there wasn't a 100% tariff on them I would heavily consider trading in my hybrid escape for a byd. Looking at the website most of their models are very close to my range requirements (I need ~650km range in the winter to do a Costco daytrip - and yes, the cost savings do in fact justify the gas, but a hotel room breaks even on cost, so we only overnight for medical appointments), and their SUVs do have roof rails (something I regret not having on my escape because my spouse likes camping).
Other than that, my only vehicle requirements are having more headroom than a Japanese vehicle (I literally have to compress my spine to touch the roof a comfortable amount, in a sequoia, which is a beast of an SUV), and (preferably) an advanced cruise control that can read speed signs and maintain a following distance to reduce my road fatigue as my daily highway commute is pretty long. Bonus points if it can actually detect and respond to deer faster than I can (looking at you ford!).
