The most effective one I know I call "eating the breadcrumbs"
First I follow the breadcrumbs since Neurotypicals and some neurodivergents like talking about themselves and I listen for indicators of things they like and respond w questions that align w them.
Then I eat the breadcrumbs by maintaining a practiced look upon my face that seems like I'm enjoying a snack and pursue each chance I get to make a joke so that I can actually enjoy the conversation. (Alcohol helps A LOT with this part).
It's a lot like social masking, but it's targeted at an individual and w a bit more depth instead of a just a public facade.
It's also more draining than ordinary masking; so I mostly use it in social situations than I know will replenish my energy.
