I'm yet to watch this mostly because I'm allergic to megachurches, (based on where I am from). That said, I'm definitely curious but I wonder how can I feel any empathy for them. (I had the same problem with Succession).
Given that the show is taking the piss out of mega churches, and Christianity period - I think this show should be right up your alley. Honestly, you'll probably have a decent idea of how you're feeling after watching the opening scene. It might be the best opening scene to a show ever. So many shows take a season to warm up, not this one.
Don't worry, you won't. They're all pretty terrible human beings. But fuck are they funny.
As in "It's always sunny in Philadelphia"? or as in "Trailer Park Boys"?
A very important distinction.
Thank you
Danny McBride is a naturally charismatic kind of actor who plays crude people who should be unlikable in a way that brings you along. That helps a lot. The other two people playing his siblings have a similar energy.
The main cast are second generation in the megachurch, with John Goodman playing the founder, and as such a lot of their weirdness is tinged with good old fashioned out-of-touch-rich-people parody. And the show is parody. You often aren't supposed to agree with the main characters when they are saying or doing awful things, but ay the end of the day they eventually tend to be up against people who are worse than them, making them the only protagonists in earshot.
Danny McBride gives me strong Trailer Park Boys' Robb Wells vibes.
