Synology requires self-branded drives

I've started to categorize enshittification headlines by how many words it takes me to know I won't be dealing with a company again (after reviewing the article for accuracy, of course). This one only took 5 words, and one is a compound. That's pretty efficient.

You’re going to have to change that system, because this is just people flying off half cocked and not getting the full details.

Reality: “Synology removes health check feature for non-synology-branded drives, but they still work fine”

Still enough to make me seek solutions elsewhere. Ultimately, the hedged version is headed in the same direction.

Not enough people considering / remembering why FOSS exists in the first place as all these companies enshittify.

That’s up to you to decide I guess, but it means that you can buy an upcoming plus series synology nas and put all fresh new Iron Wolf/WD Red/etc drives in it without issue.

I don’t really think it’s a sign that they’re going to completely lock them down any time soon as they know that would completely destroy their non-corporate side of the business.

I’ve contemplated making my own NAS, but the synology hardware and software is just unbeatable for the price and effort imo.

Ultimately then we disagree on how far clueless execs will go to chase that endless growth. But we can agree to disagree.
