There's MapLibre - a fork of Mapbox before it went full commercial

Also http://libremap.org/ and https://github.com/libremap/ (different projects as far as I can tell, one of them dormant).

That's interesting, thanks for the links! Though seems both are dormant based on activity no? So they could be asked to let this project use the name possibly!

Edit: but of course it's a hassle and a source for a lot of confusion at the same time I guess.

I didn't check activity on the github entry. Just opened a couple repos to check in there's an archived/retired message.
