@CubeOfCheese YaMap (Yet Another Map App)

[–] CyberTailor@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Keep CoMaps.

I like this name: it's cute, short and memorable. I also like that 'co-' can have multiple meanings (cooperation, coexisting, community, carbon monoxyde).

[–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

A quick search for comaps shows a couple different projects already using that name. comaps.de is some kind of map visualization. Using the comaps name could lead to some confusion.

I like folk maps, really gives the correct community/citizen cartography vibe

[–] lnxtx@feddit.nl 4 points 2 weeks ago

+1 Folk Maps

[–] CubeOfCheese@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Could you split it up so that it's one name per comment please? To make voting easier

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure thing! I have the split the options into multiple comments.

Lief Maps

  • after explorer Lief Erickson
[–] zyphlar@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Alternate spelling of Leaf Maps as well (since most people will mis-hear and type the English word rather than the name) and maybe a leafy Lief is the mascot ;)

[–] CubeOfCheese@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait I think I like this better

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago

It's neat, but would cause confusion with https://leafmap.org/

Cartogrity (Cartography + Community)

[–] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I liked your suggestion quite a lot and came up with alternative based on it (the two words staying the same):

CartoUnity

[–] zyphlar@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

CoCoMaps (community + collaboration)

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately there seems to be existing software with this name.

[–] ooprizrakoo@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'll duplicate it here

Pastk said: cOSMaps (co-OSM-maps) COSMOS Maps (Co-OSM-OpenSource)

And some ideas with the help of AI: COLABMAP (Collaborative Open Libre Access Based Mapping Application Platform) **COMMAP **Community Oriented Modern Mapping Access Project

to be honest, no word makes me completely satisfied.

There's MapLibre - a fork of Mapbox before it went full commercial

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Also http://libremap.org/ and https://github.com/libremap/ (different projects as far as I can tell, one of them dormant).

@CubeOfCheese

"There is freedom within, there is freedom without"
"Don’t dream it’s over"

Seems appropriate for an Organic Maps fork 😄

Common Maps

[–] Niquarl@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Maybe Green Map with an even greater focus on the durability of the app?

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago

Based on @LilDumpy@lemmy.world 's great suggestion, I thought of the slogan "Grass-fed, free-range, organic, and community-powered maps". And of course a cow for a mascot.

[–] LilDumpy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

In keeping with the "organic" theme, my submission is:

Free Range Maps

Unfortunately there seems to be existing software / websites with this name.
