New Windows 11 release comes with a new Windows 11 bug: middle click on explorer icon on taskbar doesn't open a new window anymore.

This taskbar shit seems so hard to do for microsoft, they took 3 years to fix the combined icons bug

same for "reopen explorer windows at login" which was broken for more than one year

If all their 100k devs are unable to fix it, why don't they open source it and rely on some amateur hobbyist to fix it for free in their spare time?

Okay, smarty pants, how does Linux—which is open source—make its money?

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Most distros are run by foundations which make a considerable amount of their money from Microsoft, grants, and donations

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It mostly doesn't. Just some donations to keep it afloat.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's not true. Do you think the engineers working full time on Linux are being paid from donations?

They work for businesses.

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, some engineers got their salary from companies. I see no problem here. You can count it as a donations from business.

I mean Linux is written for having Linux. Microsoft does its stuff having money as a goal. Principally different approaches. You can consider Linux as a non-profit organization if it is more comfortable to you.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Huh? I wasn't making a value judgement, I was just saying Linux development is largely funded from other means than donations.

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And? The question was "Where does Linux get money?", my answer was "No money, that isn't even a goal".

I don't understand you.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

There is no single "Linux" to make money is my point

It's organizations, sometimes non-profit and sometimes not. There is money in the building of linux. It doesn't run on wishes.

You're either a) misinformed if you think it's mostly funded by donations or b) not understanding the point.

Why should an OS kernel make money?

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why should Microsoft make money if they open source their OS?

[–] knightly@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The last half of your question is superfluous.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I disagree. The entire question is superfluous.
