This is worrying for a number of reasons, but one very serious one is that Trump looks to what other autocrats do and copies them if he thinks he can get away with it

The US will soon follow down this dark path. Trump has already said that he wants to do something like this, now he's just watching to see someone else do it so that he can copy their process
