Eh, it was also far enough back that Reynolds didn't have as much experience with scripts, so as a what if, that has to be factored in. Yeah, the script had some glaring flaws, there's just no guarantee a rewrite with Reynolds would have been significantly better at that time.
That being said, that movie catches way more hell than it should. The basic plot was okay, and stayed true enough to the characters that it was satisfying for the most part. Some of the performances were great, and Reynolds in particular killed it. It's actually the movie that made me a fan of his.
I still get goosebumps when he does the lantern creed. It was fucking awesome.
They kinda wasted Paralax though. Not well used, and executed poorly on top of that. That's my objection to the movie, that they picked the wrong bbeg, then used it poorly while trying to shoehorn in excuses for the choices made. And that's definitely a script problem that I think Reynolds could have mitigated
