They didn't actually kidnap kids etc, the police did that and said it was them in order to make them look stupid or incompetent. They constantly denied false flag attacks in statements but people believed it was them due to the media, even today I recommend reading this if you want to find out more about them https://archive.org/details/the-red-army-faction-a-documentary-history-volume-1-projectilesforthe-people (page 83 shows them explaining themselves)

It's not really about too much adventurosm but rather it's easy for the state to make you look bad by doing false flag attacks, until people get scared and the police use this to justify harsh crackdowns (like torturing them in prison). It's hard to think about a way around that
