Very sad. I think that's the first 787 crash?
I think so. I haven't found any previous fatal accidents from IATA.
Just had a look at a forum for pilots in Sweden. Seems like they think it was human error, due to the short runway and how the plane seemed to have stalled in the videos. Speculations to be sure, so I'm gonna wait and see what the investigation says.
My brother is a pilot (not commercial, but was working on his hours for a long time before deciding he didn’t want to) and we were talking about this through text. He told me this:
It’s the first crash of a 787 in something like 14 years and with over 1200 examples flying worldwide. I’ve watched the video several times and much doesn’t add up with this crash. Speculation as to a cause is futile at this point but the cause will be determined relatively quickly as the tail section with the recorders is intact. Reading a bit online, it would appear to be some sort of an electrical failure, likely due to an engine(s) issue which is just astronomically rare (to lose both engines). The RAT appears to be deployed, again, indicating an electrical issue. Additionally, the landing gear are tilted back which would appear to indicate a hydraulics failure. All of this leads one to believe a dual engine failure…again, astronomically rare.
I'm a private pilot and i can say too early to tell. Plane exceeded the critical angle of attack it looked like in the video, but tail sections of the plane being mostly intact could mean they flew it to the ground like you're supposed to and didn't stall it. It wasn't gaining altitude though and so thrust issues seem possible.
