Many people use language which is imprecise. Most "genie" movies are "cautionary tales" and attempt to improve common language used. Few people understood.

The conception of genies hanging out in lamps and granting wishes comes from the story of Aladdin. Most genies aren't like that. They're similar to demons or angels in Christian mythology.
