Cheap compared to ML researcher TC for sure. You could write a book on the culture of OpenAI (and Anthropic, although that's a bit different) โ a ton of employees there genuinely think that they will create AGI and bring the singularity. From what I've read, it's a cult-like environment of very highly paid people who are big into effective altruism and effective altruism. Not quite to the degree of the Zizians, but closer than I'd like.
