I'm all about the planning 🙂
Think of it this way - at the moment, alcohol is your default, your habit. You're laying down new habits and that's hard. You need to make it as easy as possible for yourself to do the new thing, until "not drinking" becomes the default.
So my first Christmas party, my plan was "I can leave after the meal if it's horrible and I'm tempted to drink. I can stay later if I want to, but just stay until I've eaten." And when I rocked up and the only non-alcoholic options were boring (water) or childish (Coke, Sprite), I was annoyed but I was also fine because I knew what my plan was and I stuck to it.
That's good advice. I like to go to Costco and get the 36 pack of sparkling water to have on hand. A podcast I listen to calls them "work beers". I feel like it's a good mental replacement for me.
I've gone weekends without drinking before. Hell, I've gone a weeks without drinking before. I CAN do it, it's just about sticking to it now.
