I would say it's more likely they hit their heads or the disabled man couldn't get up on their own. Unless there's a strong reason for financial or personal gain, I don't see it being likely that criminals would opt for a murder charge when they could just bowl an old man over and take his wallet.

I'm sorry this lead is flimsy at best. I've been drinking and even im having no trouble poking holes in it.

If this is important to you I would suggest maybe looking more into the background of the case

There can also be things in the water you get caught in as well as injured by. Canals are often used as dumping grounds.
