Some context could help me understand this
A Zionist Iranian diaspora woman who is revered in the West for using her identity as an Iranian to do the equivalent of drawing hooknose cartoons about Jews, but for Muslims.
She recently OD'd is being revered by Bomb Iran Liberals
Oh my god of course she is a zionist
She was from a wealthy secular family living comfortably under the Shah and is in no way representative of the average Iranian woman.
Your "Jews really look like that" comment is the icing on the cake
Yes indeed completely bent over with missing teeth and a long nose, Crimson Chin and every other conventionally ugly stereotype.
Or did you not notice them because the only thing you looked at is the dress?
But it's not just the shapeless body. It's every single stereotype all at once.
No way you mean people cannot criticize her racism because she's an Iranian (who isn't actually Muslim and advocates for genocide against Iranian Muslims)? How convenient. I wonder why she was picked as the token person to make racist cartoons about Iranians.
She wasn't even a Muslim. She was a part of the very small secular Iranian diaspora. This is literally like getting a German to draw Nazi propaganda about German Jews and then going "Well they are German, so you cannot say anything about it."
She wasn't part of the group she drew racist cartoons about. Do you understand this?
She's siding with the huge majority (non-Muslims in the West which are waging genocidal wars of extermination) against the small minority (Muslims in the Middle-East being genocided).
The "Muslims aren't a race" is a cop-out argument by racists because for the average Westerner there's functionally no difference. You apply the exact logic to Jews not being a race as well.
What "her own people"? She was raised in a secular non-Muslim family and was wealthy under the Shah. She doesn't represent the average Iranian whatsoever.
She sides with Israel against Palestinians what "lived experiences" do you think she has? Real dementors?
It's not about agreeing. It's about understanding that her goal was to demonize Muslims in order to bring "freedom and democracy" to their countries.
Her message of why the Middle East is in shambles wasn't "wow this colonialism thing sure is bad", but "look at what those terrible muzlamics did to themselves. If only they were enlightened like me"
Imagine if Western evangelicals were being genocided and then non-evangelical Westerner made these kinds of cartoons. Do you get it now?
She literally supports Israel, so functionally she supports the Shah.
In her book Her Life Was Good Under the Shah because she was a secular upper middle class Iranian. Then the Shah just spontaneously got up and left.
I'm not sure where your comparisons to Morocco come from. Have you paid any attention where the Middle East is? Hint: oil. Was Iraq a genocide? Was Yemen a genocide? Yes.
Israel is very openly saying they want to genocide all Iranians and have already massacared many. The US is bombing children schools. What do you think the word "war" means?
Iran is just trying to live its life and rebuild for their citizens while their population is being oppressed by the US and Israel. And you are telling me this woman is critiquing the Iranian government and siding with Israel because she wants what's best for the people?
We both know what Israel is going to do to Iran if the Iranian government falls.
I believe you can fully judge the intentions of everyone who wrote anything on the Middle East by their response to the genocide in Palestine.
Her acknowledgement of "Shah bad"doesn't really hold up when she then spends most of her time demonizing those who fought the Shah. Liberalist both-sides fence sitters who "acknowledge" the Shah was propped up by the Brits but oppose a government which Iranians wanted themselves are just two-faced.
Sure, but she wasn't literally 10 when she drew her cartoons. She was writing the comic from the perspective of a 10 year old. I'm sure she had her valid gripes with the Iranian government but her entire comic is just r/atheism zingers with only "and then everyone clapped" missing.
It wasn't a deep analysis of Iranian society. It was flattening it to confirm Western demonization of it.
The word regime is loaded, and you cannot change its meaning by being pedantic.
just fyi you're banned from hexbear, I only saw your reply because I saw this post again from lemmy.ml
Yeah I see where they're coming from though, you gotta be real careful with your criticism of muslims in the west because everythings primed or getting primed for a muslim genocide. They will take anything critical of any west asian, say "this is what Islam is, this is what muslims believe" and use it as justification to bomb schoolchildren. No matter how fair or nuanced or specific the criticism is, racists will use it as ammo. There's no value in explaining or "uncovering" human right abuses to the epstein countries. Non-europeans will have to look for allies among non-europeans, because the euros will pretend to be allies in order to stage a color revolution and suck the country dry of its resources. No matter how you are, with NATO allies you will be worse of.
Sorry you got ratio-ed so hard but I think you're getting too wrapped up in defending. It's not the author of those comics posting that - it's someone else. Right now when Iran is being attacked by the US and Israel.
Iran is currently a victim of imperialist aggression based on lies and lies and lies. Their country has been under attack by sanctions, and now bombs and rocket fire. Meanwhile we're discussing the sociological problems Iran has. It's... I don't know what to call that?
It's as if in a game show and the contestants are asked to queue up behind "Iran is evil!" and "Iran is good!" and that decides if we stop bombing them or not. This thinking of taking a whole nation and labeling it as good or evil. And it basically comes down to this: Two things cannot be true at the same time. Which is nonsense I've heard a lot from liberals recently! Who has time for two things?! I don't. We need to make quick snappy decisions between good and evil and bomb or no bomb. To any sane person the answer would be "it's complicated, hope they figure it out" and "no bomb. Bomb always bad".
But if you look on social media that isn't how people see these "shithole" countries. When a policemen or judge does something horrible, it's always the whole regime at fault. No historical or political or economic context. Just a caricature. A cartoon that is being used to give political cover for an illegal and amoral war.
Anyway, this isn't really directed at you, but everywhere I see the same tired dynamic play out. Meanwhile Ukraine has a little bit of a nazi problem and it's completely whitewashed.
It's downright shocking coming across a piece of good journalism these days that isn't blatantly biased or emotionally manipulative for one of the geopolitical powers or special (plutocrat) interests.
I have nothing to add that you haven't already been told by people that articulated it better. If a secular jew went to germany in the 1920s to draw stereotypical hasidic jews you surely would react differently to them now, a hundred years later. "ThEy ReAlLy LoOk LiKe ThAt" well at least you are quick to out yourself.
No because Jews right now aren't being systemically targeted, but they were in the 1920s. Right now muslims are systemically targetted in the west, and it is west asian countries that are bombed with the support of europeans. Rhetoric against muslims in the west is being amped up with major capitalists openly going for a muslim genocide in europe. It's in this atmosphere that she is publishing this. And of course a chador is going to look different to what hasidic jews wear, they're different religions after all.
