The answer there is simple - it only takes a few cases of liberal-ish mainstream media being dishonest or disingenuous to get people willing to believe the media sources that say they've been lied to by those, and at that point they just fall deeper and deeper into that rabbit hole. The other side doesn't have to be honest at all, they just have to be ready to catch when liberal media fucks up and then claim that they are continuing to do so the rest of the time. It's pretty insidious.
Take for example CNN after Sylville Smith was shot by police, describing his sister's speech as a "call for peace" with a clip that literally cuts off her message at the end of the sentence before she tells them to go after white neighborhoods instead. Which reads as obviously dishonest in a world where they weren't the only ones recording and social media is a thing. That hands a bunch of folks to the likes of right wingers willing to point out the truth in that case, and claim liberal media is lying the rest of the time too. Once you're in their echo chamber, it's harder to see out and are already predisposed to believe liberal media is lying to you which doesn't help.
