While this was the 11th, and final episode aired in the initial run of the show on Fox in 2002, it was intended to be the 1st and pilot episode. It introduces all of the core characters, and it does so quite well.

Yeah it doesn’t make a heap of sense. Unless you go with the theory that on the trip to the ‘verse system the original colonists ate a lot of vat grown mushroom and artificial foods. My head cannon is that fake strawberries are everywhere and real ones are a delicacy
