If you want to see what you are doing while editing there is a new and working JOSM plugin UrbanEye3D: https://github.com/Zkir/UrbanEye3D
Kedzi3D was the previous plugin but it wasn't updated for recent Java versions, UrbanEye works like a charm!

The maps usually get updated weekly. The 3D buildings only show up once you zoom in close.
