Even that is giving him too much credit. Germany's decline didn't start with him, we were already on a downward trajectory since Merkel's GroKo, and 2022 turned it into a free-fall.
Arguably trending downward since the 70s and the neoliberal era. 90s and early 2000s SPD also did damage on the social safety net.

The loot from the GDR extended things for a bit. But with Merkel it was a route to intentional decline.
