It's not even really a flip-flop, to them the guns were always about protecting American conservative identity and nothing else, for nobody else.

Now that they hold the power and they don't plan on letting go of it willingly, the guns can be used for punching down for that same goal. Making sure the gays don't corrupt the youth. Making sure the coloreds don't get too uppity.
