I have been told this recently by a local who owns many guns, but I figured Muricans here would be able to verify this

Did they ever? I figured they were just compressed air, not exactly BLAM BLAM shoot guns.

You can still hear that easily in a quiet environment (sound is variance in air pressure), though it is nothing compared to gunfire of course.
