I have been told this recently by a local who owns many guns, but I figured Muricans here would be able to verify this

Does dart gun mean something specific here? Because if it just means dart gun, I could imagine they're pretty quiet by now with modern materials

Sorry I should have clarified, dart guns used for sedatives/tranquilisers

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Did they ever? I figured they were just compressed air, not exactly BLAM BLAM shoot guns.

You can still hear that easily in a quiet environment (sound is variance in air pressure), though it is nothing compared to gunfire of course.

Do you mean sedative dart gun or like nerf? (I just found out dart gun could mean nerf gun)

[–] Spike@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I meant sedative dart guns. This guy was claiming they wouldn't be heard even metres away

If this is just curiosity ignore the rest of this post but sedative guns are not, have never been, and will never be viable for self defense.

Tranquilizer dart guns are not common. But they are essentially the same as pellet guns, just with larger bores, obviously. These can be very quiet, depending on how powerful they are. You could definitely still hear them at a few meters away, but the sound would not be recognizable as a gun.

Here's a guy shooting a pistol dart gun. https://youtu.be/ZJA57vEc27o
