I can play 25 different instruments, record and produce music at a professional level, I can direct photography for motion pictures, write television news copy, code in 5(ish) different languages, mill lumber from raw timber, pickle, dry, can, and gernally preserve food, gut and fillet SO MANY different types of fish, build structures out of earthen building material, I can wire photovoltaic panels in series or parallel and am familiar with both 12v and 24v systems, and I can do pretty much anything to a car that doesn't require a lift or a hoist.

But are any of those special without the little paper that says you can do them?

Edit: And as of last year, I can spin yarn from raw fibers, weave fabrics from that yarn, and sew clothes from pattern from that cloth.

so why dont you get a trade school diploma for one of those?

should be simple enough if you already have experience

the reason they ask for diplomas is because it's difficult to prove someones competence if they dont have that piece of paper, unfortunately

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 day ago

They give that piece of paper to rapist celebrities like Bill Cosby for no reason than they are famous.

Because school is expensive and time-consuming and I'm already working full time to BARELY get by. I love school (well, I love learning), but it's simply not an option for me at this point in my life. Obviously I've looked into it (and have a fair amount of student debt to prove that I've tried more than once), but I always have to make the choice between going to school or eating and paying rent, and I usually want to eat and have a place to live.

agh, that really sucks. i thought trade school was free in all western countries

i know university education isn't always free, but trade school costing money is news to me and news that doesnt make any sense in my head

We have a federal program in the U.S. called Job Corps that does provide free technical training in a WIDE variety of trades, but it's woefully underfunded these days, and not well known due to having a reputation as the sort of place wayward youth go to instead of juvenile hall, and you have to be between the ages of 16 and 24 at the time you start.

Free education isn't really a thing here.

i hope the DSA folk get more influence there, they seem like the only force actually capable of doing any real change within a reasonable time period

[–] MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, yes, but the DSA has had a problematic and interesting history (I say this as a former member/member at large). And it's important to remember that they're not a political party and can run no candidates themselves (which would never work if they tried), so their best bet is to try to turn the DEEEPLY entreched liberal Democratic Party, which is like pulling teeth.

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

can u elaborate on what you find problematic about their history?

i'm curious cus i only really know about their present day stuff and not even much about that

[–] MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Ohh, a few years ago there was a series of (verified) SA and harassment allegations levied at some of the national leadership, around the same time there was a pretty big controversy surrounding the misappropriation of funds donated my members and also membership dues, and for this reason the Libertarian Socialist Caucus largely dissolved and left the organization. It was a whole kerfuffle

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

damn, that's a mess.

i hope that kind of stuff stays in the past and they can move on

[–] MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 20 hours ago

Me too. It gives me hope that they're supporting more and more radical candidates, though.
