The oddest bit to me is that he seems to still be going at least somewhat when he decides to brake, in the middle of the flooding, to come to a halt.
Yep, if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO drive through a flooded area, never take your foot of the gas
He would also have higher chances if he went slower - the wave he created was high enough to get into intakes
My comment is not about speed, use gear 1 if you need but the moment you take your foot off the gas water will get into your engine
Looks like the car started to drift to the side, and he braked because he might hit the railing.
